  • The Team USA main roster was beaten in scrimmages by the Select Team on Saturday
  • Steve Kerr then moved Anthony Edwards into a starting role in the main roster
  • The 2023 FIBA Basketball Team USA roster then reportedly proceeded to sweep the Select Team

Team USA is preparing for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. A lot of the conversation since the roster was announced has been negative though, with the absence of stars like Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Paul George being noted.

The criticism was amplified after Team USA lost to the USA Select Team in scrimmages on Saturday, which is mostly made up of younger NBA stars that are less established. But one small change has turned the tides, according to reports.

“Steve Kerr moved Anthony Edwards into the starting lineup on Saturday and started him next to Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Brandon Ingram, and Jaren Jackson Jr. The main roster swept the select team in scrimmages.”

Anthony Edwards already has an All-Star selection under his belt at the age of 22 and is widely considered one of the best young players in the league. He was expected to start for Team USA after the roster was announced, although it seems that he’s had to wait for his opportunity.

Edwards averaged 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season and all the noise around him has suggested that he is ready to take the next step. The FIBA World Cup with Team USA seems like the perfect opportunity to make that happen.

Anthony Edwards Has Massive Expectations From Himself And His Team

While he hasn’t said too much about Team USA and their expectations, Edwards has been candid about what he wants from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2023-24 season. He was as bold as to say that the team might reach some serious milestones

“I just have team goals. All the individual stuff will come when you win as a team. We wanna win 50 games this year,” Ant said in an interview with Shams Charania. “We wanna get KAT to an MVP level this year.

“We want Rudy [Gobert] to be the Defensive Player of the Year. We just want all the things that are supposed to be. We’re gonna work for it. This year, we’re gonna be a lot better.”

Anthony Edwards has shown all the signs of blossoming into a true leader in the NBA. He has the chance to make his mark on Team USA and earn some more fans too. He is definitely one to watch starting as soon as the FIBA World Cup later this month.
