As fans of the NBA, we can easily associate certain players and teams with a specific color. Purple is usually associated with the Lakers and Jazz. Blue can be associated with the Mavericks, Knicks, and others. Every team has its own signature colorway and specific jersey schemes that will stick with us for the rest of our lives. They are part of what makes certain jerseys, teams, and players so iconic in our minds.Â

James Harden vs. Stephen Curry

One matchup that we have rarely seen in our matchups here is the one between James Harden and Stephen Curry. Harden brings a unique blend of guard skills to the table, especially on offense, to use to his advantage. Of course, there are his handles and different ways he can score, whether it be his patented stepback three-pointer or the way he can manipulate himself to the foul line. Harden’s size will be a factor on defense but not a big one considering the screens he will have to fight through anyway. Harden can make it a tough night for Curry defensively if Curry doesn’t wear him down from having to chase him for close to 45 minutes.
As for Curry, the goal will be to tire Harden out as much as possible. Getting out in transition and his off-ball movement will do both this and create the shots that make him one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in NBA history. Defensively, Curry will end up needing help, and there is no way around that. The size, speed, and skill from Harden will wear on him if Harden stays in attack mode. Curry will still impact the game as he always does as one of the best players on the floor, providing spacing and off-ball playmaking, the likes of which may never be mirrored in NBA history again.
Michael Jordan vs. Luka Doncic

This matchup has storylines that go beyond basketball. Michael Jordan is the man behind the Jordan Brand, while Luka Doncic is its star ambassador in 2022-23. On the court, it could prove to be a long night for Luka Doncic on the defensive side of the ball. Jordan will undoubtedly be in attack mode, and Doncic will undoubtedly be searching for answers. One thing that always seems to be forgotten about Jordan is the strength he had on both sides of the ball, confirmed by hundreds of opponents over the years. This will serve as an advantage for Jordan as he gets past Doncic on offense but also as he fends him off on defense to prevent him from getting to the paint.
Doncic has his work cut out for him going up against the GOAT. On offense, his game will be simplified enough by the presence of other top-tier playmakers and scorers, which will open things up for Doncic to go to work. On defense, Doncic only has two ways to hope to contain Jordan. One is to use his big frame to get physical with Jordan, which will most likely not work out in his favor. The second option is to force him into the bigger bodies on the team, such as Giannis and Jokic in the frontcourt as well as Kawhi on the wing. Double teams are inevitable in the defense of Jordan, so there will be pressure on others to make plays.
Tracy McGrady vs. Kawhi Leonard

There isn’t one NBA fan in the world who wouldn’t want to see this matchup. Tracy McGrady is one of the best all-around offensive players of the 2000s. McGrady was a true three-level scoring threat who was nearly impossible to stop once he got in a rhythm. McGrady could take his defender off the dribble fairly easily and was a knockdown shooter from the mid-range territory. As streaky as he could be from three-point range when he found his groove, he could get hot from anywhere on the court.
The problem for McGrady will be the fact that no ordinary defender is across from him in this matchup. Kawhi Leonard is a former two-time Defensive Player of the Year who is widely considered to be one of the best two-way players at his position in NBA history. Leonard will give McGrady loads of issues on defense with his defensive abilities and physical attributes like length and lateral movement. Kawhi is no slush on offense either and will look to get to the bask as often as possible especially considering the lack of size for the Red Team in the frontcourt.
Scottie Pippen vs. Giannis Antetokounmpo

At first glance, our next matchup seems to be incredibly one-sided in favor of the White team, considering the discrepancy in size and strength between Scottie Pippen and Giannis. Pippen will not make this easy in any way for Giannis, and I will explain why. How often do we see Giannis either bringing the ball up the court or getting started in half-court possessions from the perimeter? A lot. Serving mostly as a playmaker and facilitator on offense, Pippen’s focus will be on preventing Giannis from getting a head of steam when making his way into the lane.
As for Giannis, he needs to take his game to the post and keep it there. There will be no reason to be on the perimeter when there are Curry, Luka, and Kawhi to take care of things out there. I understand that with their spacing and Giannis’ strengths that he may want to head to the perimeter in order to get his game going, but he can and will absolutely dominate Pippen in the post. With Olajuwon helping, he and Jokic can take advantage of the smaller Pippen to the fullest if they play off each other like we already think they can.
Hakeem Olajuwon vs. Nikola Jokic

This might be the matchup that fans line up around the block for. Hakeem Olajuwon is considered by many to be the greatest defender ever, while his opponent in this matchup has a case to be the greatest offensive center ever already. Olajuwon is no slouch himself on offense and will undoubtedly dominate his matchup with Jokic in the post. In rebounding, scoring, and all things defense, the advantage has to lie with the Red Team and Hakeem Olajuwon, and trust me, that is no knick on Nikola Jokic.
Jokic’s offense is already at legendary status at just 27 years old. In 2022-23, he is averaging a triple-double and is the greatest passing big man ever already. Jokic is going to thrive in the high post when he sees Curry open cross-court or even Doncic and Leonard as well. The two-man game between him and Luka will be astounding to the fans in the stands, and when we mix in Giannis and Curry, look out below. While Hakeem dominates the individual matchup in many ways, Jokic’s team will benefit greatly from the way he sees the floor and can make everyone around him better.
All-Time Red Team Advantages
Both of these teams are built to make this series last seven games and there are a few advantages that can help them do so. For the Red Team, we will have to first speak about their scoring. The greatest scorer in NBA history will be the number one option for the Red Team as Michael Jordan takes the lead. Then, we add on James Harden and Hakeem Olajuwon to make it one of the toughest three-headed monsters ever put together. While Giannis and Hakeem’s battle down low will be a movie, Harden and Jordan’s attack on the defense will open up so many opportunities for Tracy McGrady and even Scottie Pippen as a result.
Another glaring advantage that the Red Team will have is on the defensive side of the ball. Three of the greatest defenders at their respective positions will lead the Red Team to potential victory. Michael Jordan’s defense against both Luka and Curry on switches will be instrumental in any victory for the Red Team. While Giannis and Kawhi reside on the other side, Pippen, Hakeem, and Jordan could be too much for the offense they present. Pippen will have his hands full with Giannis, but having Hakeem as backup is about as good as it gets.
All-Time White Team Advantages
The White Team also holds a few advantages over the Red Team and they may even be more advantageous than the ones the Red Team holds. The first of these advantages is the fact that they have a full lineup of elite playmakers. Doncic and Curry are a lethal backcourt duo due to the off-ball attention that Curry draws due to his shooting and the way that Luka can exploit any weakness that any defense may have. Giannis and Jokic form a lethal frontcourt as well, with Jokic’s innate passing ability and extremely high basketball IQ and Gianiss’ dominant play style. Leonard will also make his fair share of plays on both sides of the ball.
The White Team also had the automatic advantage when it comes to outside shooting. This lineup of playmakers can stretch the floor extremely well especially when you consider the presence of Stephen Curry. He presents the ultimate matchup issues when you factor in the range he can shoot the ball and how accurately he does it. This will inevitably give the White Team open shots from others on the outside, a shot that Kawhi, Luka, and Jokic can hit on a consistent basis.
Who Would Win This Matchup In A 7-Game Series?
In Game One, Stephen Curry would get things going for the White Team as he would knock down four three-pointers in the first quarter. Nikola Jokic dished out five assists as well, and they built an early lead on the Red Team. Michael Jordan and Tracy McGrady would handle most of the scoring on the night for the Red team, with McGrady going for 30 and Jordan pouring in 34. In the end, it would be curry feasting off screens and knocking down 11 threes on the night to finish with 37 points and a 1-0 series lead for the White Team.
Game Two would get started with Hakeem Olajuwon establishing his dominance over the White Team’s front court. Olajuwon would net three first-quarter blocks and end up with seven total in the game to go with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Michael Jordan was on fire in this one once again, as he ended up with 37 points, nine assists, and four steals. For the White Team, it just wasn’t their night, but Giannis led the way for them with 28 points and 14 rebounds. The series would be tied after two games after a 112-99 victory for the Red Team.
Game Three would be a back-and-forth battle between these two star-studded squads as they fight for the upper hand in the series. Nikola Jokic would do his part and then some, with 11 assists and 14 rebounds to go with his 20 points on the night. For the Red Team, James Harden would finally get in the mix knocking down seven three-pointers and dishing out 13 assists to go with his 29 points. In the end, this one would come down to the fourth quarter, where the game was tied 93-93 at the start. Michael Jordan and Tracy McGrady would each play closer for the Red Team as they both poured in 10 points in the quarter to seal the victory and a 2-1 series lead for the Red Team.
Game Four was all about the White Squad as they looked to avoid a 3-1 hole in the series. Curry came out on fire, going 8-9 from three in the first half and building a nice cushion for the White Team headed into the break. Giannis was in control of the paint for three quarters as the White Squad built a 20-point lead in the game at one point. Curry would finish with 42 points on 11-14 shooting from three, and Giannis would add 30 points and 11 rebounds to the mix as the White Team evened up the series once again at two games apiece.
A pivotal Game Five got chippy early as Jordan and Doncic got into it more than once in the first half. Jordan’s physical play frustrated Doncic as he looked for calls from the refs, and Jordan let him know he wasn’t letting up. Kawhi returned the favor on the other end to McGrady as the Klaw shut him down in this game with only 11 points on 3-14 shooting. Jordan would be the hero for the Red Team in the fourth quarter and finish with a cool 46 points on 55.0% shooting from the floor on the night, mostly on drives to the basket and mid-range shots. Jordan’s big night would give the Red Team a chance to wrap up the series in six games.
Game Six was of the utmost importance for the White Team as they looked to avoid elimination. Luka Doncic would have his breakout game of the series finally, as he found Curry for open shots and Giannis on transition buckets almost effortlessly. Doncic would finish the contest with 33 points and 15 assists. Jordan did his best to keep the Red Team in the game with 36 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Curry would be the real hero on the night once again as he helped the White Team force a Game Seven with 43 points on the night.
The series between these two superteams would all come down to a Game Seven for the ages. Each team traded big shots and defensive stops, with Michael Jordan leading the way for the Red Team and the duo of Curry and Giannis leading the White Team. Curry’s shooting and Giannis’ job on the glass kept the White team in it, but in the end, it would not be enough to slow down their adversaries in Hakeem and MJ. Olajuwon would finish with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks, and Jordan would finish with 48 points, six rebounds, and six assists. The Red Team would finish off the series by way of a 134-123 final score.Â
