No team in the Eastern Conference embodies mediocrity more than the Washington Wizards. Despite having some notable players over the years, the franchise has failed to get over the hump, and last season’s underwhelming finish was just the latest in a long line of disappointments for the team. But now, things are about to change in a big way.
With new President Michael Winger now officially at the helm, there is a sense within the league that a rebuild is likely sooner rather than later.
“Many rival executives The Athletic has polled informally over the last two weeks expect Winger to undertake a full rebuild — if not this offseason, then within the next year,” wrote Josh Robbins of The Athletic.

The Wizards have become the NBA’s poster child for dysfunction as many decision-makers throughout the franchise missed the mark on several key opportunities, like when they picked up Otto Porter Jr. instead of Giannis in 2013 and traded talented role players for Russell Westbrook in 2020.
Their biggest mistake, however, is their commitment to Bradley Beal, who is now owed over $40+ per year. There is no doubt that Beal is an All-Star, but his role as a lead option for the Wizards is questionable at best. According to some, the best way for Washington to become a real threat is to move on from Beal while they can still get something back for him.
Will Bradley Beal Be Traded This Summer?
As tempting as it may be to theorize where Bela could land next, it’s worth mentioning that he has one of the NBA’s last remaining no-trade clauses, so he cannot be included in any deal without giving explicit permission.
Even still, Beal doesn’t bother to put pressure on the front office or threaten a potential departure. What he does do is express his desire to win by any means necessary.
“I’m definitely frustrated,” Beal said in a press conference. “I’m also at peace with where I am and who we are, and what we need to do to be better. It’s nothing I can do… We know where we failed and how we have to be better. It’s never one time where I’m like, ‘you know what, I’m out of here,’ you know? But I very well could, like you said, because I do have a no-trade. But I don’t use it as a trump card.”
We don’t yet know what teams would be willing to offer in a trade for Beal, but common sense says that a shooter of his caliber would cost a premium package. At the very least, we know the Wizards are close to entertaining such options.
