Now that the Denver Nuggets have had time to celebrate their championship victory, the franchise can look ahead to a busy summer. As many teams across the league angle to secure the next big superstar, the Nuggets will be doing their best to bring back their guys and run it back for round two.

As far as free agents go, the Nuggets really only have one guy to worry about: Bruce Brown. But as Michael Malone told the city of Denver on Thursday, he’s not worried about Brown going anywhere.

“Is Brucey B going anywhere? Hell no! We’re running this sh*t back! … Get loud!”

As a free agent this summer, Brown will have his pick of teams to choose from and he is sure to get some generous offers. Even still, the Nuggets have all the leverage in the world to work with.

“The Nuggets will have Brown’s Non-Bird rights, allowing them to re-sign him to up to a $7.8 million starting salary,” wrote HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan. “If he accepts a one-year deal for that amount, he would accrue Early Bird rights following the 2023-24 season. This would allow Denver to re-sign him in 2024 for up to four years, projected at $56 million. This salary structure would give Brown an annual salary close to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which is the likely amount most teams will offer him this summer.”

The Nuggets Are The Team To Beat In The West

We can expect Western teams to be very active and aggressive in adding talent this summer. But in the aftermath of Denver’s dominant playoff run, it’s clear that the West will run through the Nuggets for years to come.

“Pat Riley said something many years ago, I used to have it on my board when I was head coach in Sacramento,” said coach Malone. “It talks about the evolution in this game and how you go from a nobody to an upstart, from an upstart to a winner, winner to a contender, a contender to a champion. The last step after a champion is to be a dynasty, so we are not satisfied.”

Losing Bruce Brown would not be an unrecoverable loss for the Nuggets, but we all saw how key he is to their defense and they will need all the help they can get trying to defend their championship next season.
