Once a Celtic, always a Celtic. And for NBA legend Paul Pierce, that fact couldn’t be more true.
The guy practically bleeds green and if he isn’t talking about his playing days, he’s showing support for the guys they have out there now. Recently, he said that the Celtics would have an advantage over L.A. if the two were to collide in the NBA Finals this postseason.
“If these two meet in the Finals, full-strength, the Celtics have the advantage psychologically,” Pierce said. “Period. I think Celtics have the best starting five in the NBA. They have the best collection of scoring forwards, and that’s what you need to win in the game today. If you look at all the top champions over the last 20 years, and you say, ‘Who’s been the Finals MVP?’ It’s going to be that swing guy who can get his own shot … The Paul Pierce-type, the Kobe Bryant-type.”
Pierce’s point about star forwards actually does make sense. The Warriors had Kevin Durant, the Cavs and Heat had LeBron James, the Spurs and Raptors had Kawhi Leonard. A solid wing seems to be a pretty important building block for Championship teams nowadays.
Boston has got two of them in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. But then again, the Lakers have got LeBron James. It’s hard to say for sure who would win in a postseason matchup but they’ve split the season series so far at one apiece so one has to think Boston would stand a chance.
Unfortunately, we won’t get to see them face off again until (maybe) the Finals, where things could honestly go either way.
