After enduring a tumultuous stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, Russell Westbrook found himself in need of a fresh start. Traded to the Lakers in a blockbuster deal that paired him with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Westbrook was initially expected to be a key piece in the Lakers’ championship pursuit.

“I was so ready to play based on the situation I was in and how it ended…I felt like the joy back having fun playing again.”

The 2021-2022 season was a trying time for Westbrook and his family, who endured harassment and backlash amid the Lakers’ disappointing performance. As the offseason approached, Westbrook sought a change of scenery, eager to rediscover the joy of playing the game he loves.

However, injuries, poor play, and an aging roster led to a disappointing season for the team, culminating in a 33-49 record and a failure to make the playoffs. Westbrook bore the brunt of the criticism for the Lakers’ struggles, facing scrutiny from fans and media alike.

He was traded to the Utah Jazz as the Lakers started a massive re-tooling of the team. Despite initially preparing to report to the Utah Jazz after a buyout, Westbrook found himself in a state of limbo as negotiations dragged on.

During this uncertain period, Westbrook found solace in focusing on his physical and mental well-being. He dedicated himself to rigorous workouts in Las Vegas, seeking to clear his mind and prepare for whatever path lay ahead. Eventually, Westbrook reached an agreement with the Jazz on a buyout, allowing him to join a new team without having to uproot his family.

Signing with the LA Clippers on February 22, Westbrook found himself rejuvenated and reinvigorated. Joining a talented Clippers squad, Westbrook quickly embraced his role as the team’s leading sixth man. With his infectious energy and relentless determination, Westbrook has become a vital contributor off the bench, averaging 11.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 47.0% from the field.

More importantly, Westbrook has rediscovered the joy of playing basketball, relishing the opportunity to have fun on the court once again. His infectious enthusiasm and competitive spirit have endeared him to his teammates and fans alike, injecting new life into the Clippers’ season. Currently, the Clippers sit third in the Western Conference standings with a record of 34-15, poised for a deep playoff run.

In contrast, the Lakers find themselves in a precarious position, clinging to the ninth seed in the West with a record of 27-25. While the Lakers continue to grapple with inconsistency and uncertainty, Westbrook has found a sense of stability and purpose with the Clippers. His journey from the Lakers’ nightmare to the Clippers’ resurgence serves as a testament to his resilience and determination to succeed, no matter the circumstances.

The Lakers’ 2021-22 Season Failure Is Not On Russell Westbrook

The failure of the Los Angeles Lakers‘ 2021-2022 season cannot be solely attributed to Russell Westbrook. While Westbrook was certainly a high-profile addition to the team, there were several factors that contributed to the Lakers’ disappointing performance.

Firstly, the composition of the roster was heavily skewed towards veteran superstars, lacking the balance of young talent. This imbalance led to issues with fatigue and inconsistency as the season progressed. A successful team typically requires a mix of experienced players and promising young talent to maintain competitiveness throughout the grueling NBA season.

Moreover, injuries to key players, namely Anthony Davis and LeBron James, severely hampered the Lakers’ ability to establish chemistry and continuity on the court. Davis missed a staggering 42 games due to injury, while James was sidelined for 27 games. Such prolonged absences from their two best players undoubtedly disrupted the team’s rhythm and cohesion.

Throughout the tumultuous season, Russell Westbrook remained a consistent presence on the court, showcasing his trademark intensity and work ethic. Despite his best efforts, the much-anticipated partnership between Westbrook and LeBron James failed to yield the desired results. However, Westbrook cannot be faulted for the lack of chemistry between himself and James, as establishing synergy between two high-profile stars can be a challenging task.

Off the court, Westbrook and his family faced relentless harassment and scrutiny from fans and media alike. The negative atmosphere surrounding the team took a toll on Westbrook, who admitted to struggling to find joy in playing basketball. However, since joining the LA Clippers, Westbrook has experienced a resurgence in his enjoyment of the game, relishing the opportunity to play with renewed passion and enthusiasm.

In conclusion, while Russell Westbrook’s tenure with the Lakers may not have lived up to expectations, it would be unfair to place the blame squarely on his shoulders. The Lakers’ failure to meet their objectives was the result of a combination of factors, including roster composition, injuries, and off-court distractions. As Westbrook thrives with the Clippers, it is evident that his struggles with the Lakers were not indicative of his abilities as a player, but rather a reflection of the team’s collective shortcomings.
