Former NBA player Joe Smith and his wife Kisha Chavis went viral recently after Chavis shared a video where Smith was seen getting upset over her opening an OnlyFans account without telling him. She received a lot of backlash over it and Chavis stated during an appearance on “TMZ Live” that Smith isn’t living with her now.
“He’s pretty p***ed off with me,” Chavis said when asked where Smith is. “I think he’s at his sister’s house, he’s not talking to me right now.”
Chavis revealed she opened the account over a year ago, and that the link is on her social media accounts. She stated that a friend of Smith’s was trying to cause some trouble by informing her husband about it.
“He has a friend that he’s been entertaining and she decided that she wants to put a bigger wedge in our relationship,” Chavis continued. “So, she went digging around my page and was like ‘Oh do you know that she has this?’ And it blew up from that.”
Chavis claims she was an established singer in Europe before she met Smith and had always lived a good life. She thought the two of them would go from strength to strength once they became a couple but it didn’t happen. Chavis also revealed that the 48-year-old knew she was an adult video star when they met, so he shouldn’t have been surprised she created an OnlyFans account.
“I’m sorry. You knew I was an adult video star when you met me,” Chavis said. “If I would do anything for my own survival then, what makes you think that would change now?”
Chavis says she had started multiple businesses in order to support the family, but then COVID-19 happened, which messed everything up. She then did what she believed she had to do, in order to live a better life.
She also stated that the two of them, who got married in 2018, have been together since 2012 after Smith had to retire from the NBA because teams were no longer interested in him. She claims her husband fell into depression because of it, and didn’t really put an effort into his post-NBA career.
“I’m not sorry for what I’m doing, I’m just sorry that he can’t understand that … it wasn’t a selfish decision,” Chavis said. “It was a decision that I made. I made an executive decision when my man wasn’t taking the lead.”
She isn’t sorry about opening the account and stated she would continue operating it as long as their current financial situation doesn’t change. Chavis also believes Smith will come around and won’t file for divorce.
“I don’t want to be alone, but if that’s what it has to be, that’s what it has to be,” Chavis added. “But, I don’t think we’ll have a divorce, I don’t think so. I think he’ll come around.”
While I sympathize with Chavis for the circumstances she had found herself in which led her to go down this round, I don’t think she understands the biggest mistake she made. It wasn’t that she opened the account, but the fact that she didn’t tell Smith about it.
Once you break that trust, it’s very hard for things to go back to normal. Chavis should have just told him that she was going to open the account unless he made a concentrated effort to improve their lives. Had Smith then failed to do so, then she’d have every right to open the account.
How Did Joe Smith End Up In Trouble Financially?
Smith was selected with the number one pick of the 1995 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He never became the star that they’d hoped he’d be, but Smith still managed to play 16 seasons in the NBA, averaging 10.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game.
You’d assume that anyone who played for so long would have made a good amount of money and Smith did, but he blew it all away. During an appearance on “Back in the Game” in 2018, Smith revealed that while he had earned $61 million in salaries, he only ended up actually getting $18 million, as the rest went into taxes and agent fees.
A lot of that $18 million was spent on buying new houses whenever he was traded and those would end up being sold for losses once he moved to another location. Smith also recklessly spent on cars, and had a costly divorce from his first wife Yolanda in 2011, after she caught him cheating on her.
Then once he got together with Chavis, they started spending well beyond their means. During the episode, it was revealed they were only making $26,000 a year but were spending $133,000. It gives you a clear idea of why the two are in a difficult financial situation and why Chavis opened the account.
