Gilbert Arenas is remembered best for his time with the Washington Wizards, but he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors. He spent his first two years in the NBA with the team and had some epic stories to tell about that time as well.
Gilbert Arenas has always been a wild character, and his locker-room antics got out f hand during his time with the Wizards later in his career. But even when he was younger, he was a menace, as this one story he told shows.
“We had the old vets where they would drink beer on the bench. That type,” Arenas said. “I had to do donut runs, which was fine until they started being picky. I live here, the gym is here, the donut place is here (pointing in opposite directions) and I couldn’t buy them the night before, they would see the time stamp.
“And they didn’t reimburse me. Remember, I don’t have no money, I’m like, ‘Wait a minute.’ And don’t let me go to sleep at the gym. Now I gotta leave to go to the donut shop.
“One day I just got mad, licked all the donuts, got all the glaze off, and put baby powder on it. They took a bite out of it, ooooooh, what? I got a whooping that day. That was the last day I had to buy donuts though.”
The idea of eating donuts somebody has already licked with baby powder on them is truly nasty. Only Gilbert Arenas could have cooked something like that up, it fits right into his rather wildcard character.
The 2001-02 Golden State Warriors Team Was Quite Bad
It’s hard to imagine the Golden State Warriors not having a stacked team, but before the franchise got better in the 2010s, they had a history of putting out some bad teams. In 2001-02 the team was dead last in the Western Conference with a terrible 21-61 record. Vets on the team were players like Mookie Blaylock, Dean Garrett, and Chris Mills, who were almost from a different era altogether.
Despite being a rookie and a second-round pick, Arenas was the 5th highest scorer on the team in his rookie season, playing in 47 games and averaging 24.6 minutes per game. It’s not surprising that he left the Warriors after just two years if this is the type of relationship he had with his teammates.
