Kobe Bryant, through the course of his career, became a pop culture icon. Bryant’s incredible play, ironically enough, helped him transcend the sport and become an inspiration for some of the biggest names in the world, across both sports and entertainment. But in his younger days, Bryant got some advice from another pop culture icon.

Kobe Bryant, during the summer after his rookie season, would receive a phone call from none other than Michael Jackson. The King of Pop told Kobe Bryant to keep working hard and playing to the best of his abilities.

“Keep doing what you’re doing,” Michael Jackson told Kobe. “Don’t come back to the pack and be normal for the sake of blending in with others. Don’t dumb it down.”

It’s hard to say how much the advice from Michael Jackson resonated with Kobe. But if we look at his career, Kobe pretty much did exactly what Jackson implored him to do. He set himself apart with his work ethic and his desire to win, and it allowed him to be incredibly successful.

Kobe Bryant Was A Warrior On The Court

Kobe Bryant did what Michael Jackson did for him later in his career. In a recent podcast, Paul George spoke about how Kobe Bryant gave him advice on how to adjust and change his game after George got injured. Bryant became a mentor for many players in the NBA and tried to help some of the younger players in the NBA.

Bryant is someone who is idolized by several of the young stars in the NBA. Players like Devin Booker and Jayson Tatum have made it very clear how they molded much of their game based on Kobe. And they consistently try to honor his memory by playing well. Bryant will forever be immortal among fans of the NBA.
