The Philadelphia 76ers fired Doc Rivers following another playoff disappointment, and the franchise has been in the market for a new Head Coach.
Monty Williams has been mentioned as someone who could take over the reins, but recent reports have pointed out a potential advantage for Nick Nurse in the running to be the next leader of the Philadelphia 76ers.
“Sources have said that reuniting with Morey is very much enticing to Nurse,” Keith Pompey wrote for The Philadelphia Inquirer. “It’s no secret that Nurse has a great relationship with Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey. As the Houston Rockets general manager, Morey hired Nurse before the 2011-12 season to coach the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Rockets’ NBA G League affiliate.”
“Nurse interviewed with the Sixers on Monday before meeting with the Suns on Thursday. The 55-year-old coach is pondering the best destination for him, according to sources. However, a source would not say if the Sixers offered him the gig. Sources said earlier this week that the Sixers will have a better idea what direction their search to replace Doc Rivers is headed in by week’s end.”
Nick Nurse is a former Coach Of The Year, and he led the Toronto Raptors to their only NBA championship in 2019. He has experience coaching superstars and has a 227-163 regular season record, as well as a 25-16 record in the playoffs. There is, however, a lot of competition to acquire his services.
The Phoenix Suns Are Also Considering Nick Nurse To Be Their Next Head Coach
The Milwaukee Bucks had shortlisted Nick Nurse in their coaching search but ended up appointing his Raptors assistant, Adrian Griffin instead. There is another team that has their eye on Nurse though, the Phoenix Suns are reportedly interested in bringing in Nurse to coach their team. They have Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, an exciting proposition to work with for any top coach in the NBA.
Daryl Morey is one of the premier front-office executives in the NBA, and if he wants Nurse, he will surely use his connections to try and secure his services. Joel Embiid and Nick Nurse have butted heads in the past, but they will surely be willing to put that aside in service of winning. In any case, the Sixers getting Nurse could spell trouble for their Eastern Conference competitors moving forward.
