Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are two of the most successful basketball players in the history of the NBA.

Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships during his career, while Kobe brought five titles for the Los Angeles Lakers. The man behind those 11 championships was Phil Jackson. Speaking of him, Jackson answered who he would start a franchise with from scratch between MJ and Kobe in an interview with TIME magazine in 2013.

“In my estimation, the guy that has to be there is Bill Russell, who won 11 championships as a player. I think that’s the idea of what excellence is. Is when you win championships. … I’d do a coin flip, and whichever one came up heads or tails, I would take that person (between Jordan and Kobe).”

Jackson picked Bill Russell to start a team. But when asked about Jordan and Kobe, he believes it’s a tie, and he would rely on a coin toss to make the decision.

It’s no surprise since MJ and Kobe had similar skill sets. However, when we compared the two superstars, Jordan still came out on top. It was a close contest, but Kobe still fell short of dethroning Mike as the GOAT.

Phil Jackson Explained The Biggest Difference Between Michael Jordan And Kobe Bryant

Most usually regard Kobe Bryant as the carbon copy of Michael Jordan. To be honest, Bryant did base the majority of his game on the Chicago Bulls legend.

Still, as per Phil Jackson, there is one massive difference between the two legends. The Zen Master revealed it was their leadership style.

“Though at times he could be hard on his teammates, Michael was masterful at controlling the emotional climate of the team with the power of his presence. Kobe had a long way to go before he could make that claim. He talked a good game, but he’d yet to experience the cold truth of leadership in his bones, as Michael had.”

Although it took him some time, Kobe learned to trust his teammates. It helped him in winning back-to-back NBA Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010.
