Ja Morant is finally being made to face the consequences of actions that have been bubbling under the surface for months.

The latest instance saw Morant flash a gun while partying in Denver, which led to a 2-game suspension for the Memphis Grizzlies star. However, his hiatus may stretch for more than 2 games according to head coach Taylor Jenkins.

“Very tough moment. Everyone knows I’m not going to comment on internal conversations we’ve had as a team with Ja, we’ve had as a leadership group. We love him, we want what’s best for him. It’s going to be a difficult process but we’ve got a great group to get through this… The focus right now is to make sure Ja gets the help he needs to get into a better place, generally speaking, but on the flip side, embrace responsibilities and expectations as a member of this team. That’s what we’re dialoguing about, we’re going to be supportive but we’re going to hold him accountable as well… There’s no definitive timeline. We’ve said it’ll be at least 2 games but we’re taking it one day at a time. This is going to be an ongoing healing process so I can’t comment on what the exact timetable will be because this is not a timetable situation”

It seems the Grizz are focusing on rehabilitating Ja after a series of controversies this season. We’ve seen him issue threats on Twitter, allegedly punched a 17-year-old, and allegedly have his friends harass the Indiana Pacers by aiming a laser at them. Due to Morant’s status as a possible future superstar, everyone will be doing everything in their power to ensure he stays on the straight and narrow path.

Is This A Fair Punishment?

Ja Morant is only dealing with a suspension for his actions, which many believe isn’t fair due to the extent to which Kyrie Irving was punished earlier this season for sharing an anti-Semitic movie link on Twitter. Morant benefitted from the Kyrie scandal, as Nike dropped Kyrie’s signature shoe in favor of giving Morant one. Nike has stood by Morant, so it seems everyone is hoping Ja comes back without more controversies.

The Grizzlies will sacrifice their competitive edge by benching Morant for longer but if that’s what is needed to send the message home, it is what should be done. Everyone will be watching Morant’s actions and behavior with a scanner from now on, which will definitely cause the 23-year-old to be a lot more careful with what he does off the court.
