The Kevin Durant saga took yet another turn earlier this week when it was reported that KD issued an ultimatum during a meeting with Nets owner Joe Tsai that the team fire GM Sean Marks and head coach Steve Nash. Tsai surprisingly ended up siding with Marks and Nash, and it seems almost certain now that Durant is on his way out.
Andre Iguodala, his former teammate with the Warriors, recently spoke about the Durant saga on his “Point Forward” podcast, and he thinks that KD should stay in Brooklyn.
(starts at 5:12 mark):
“I think he should stay in Brooklyn, it’s such a big market, it’s good for the game and just figure out how to make it work like everybody grow up and make it work. That’s how I feel about the situation.”
“This is a situation where it’s either, look, man just come out here and play or don’t play because you got 4 years, we got you for a while so it’s not like you’re on an expiring contract and then you can just take off a year and we just give up a year. Like he’s getting older and time is everything.”
In an ideal world, they would find a way to make it work, but it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen. It was initially believed that KD would show up even if he wasn’t traded, but now, Brian Windhorst says Durant could skip training camp with the way things are going.
The situation is probably going to get ugly, as it really doesn’t look like anything is going to happen soon, and one league executive stated that a Durant trade could take months to materialize. He really cannot afford to waste a season this late into his career by sitting out, and you’d wish that if a trade doesn’t happen, then Durant would relent and play out this season at least. The roster is talented enough to make some noise in the postseason if he is fully committed to the cause, and he can help right the wrongs from that series against the Celtics.
