  • Austin Reaves’ older brother Spencer plays basketball professionally in Germany
  • Spencer isn’t jealous of his younger brother’s success
  • He thinks he can still beat Austin if they play 1-on-1

Spencer Reaves may have had dreams of having the kind of career his younger brother Austin is in the midst of, but he isn’t jealous of his success. Austin Reaves has become a key piece for the Los Angeles Lakers and in an interview with ClutchPoints, Spencer stated he’s proud of him, but would beat him if they played 1-on-1.

“They’d be like, ‘Are you jealous of Austin?’ I’m like, ‘No. I’ll still whoop his a** in a game of 1-on-1.’ Just super proud of him,” Spencer said. “People telling him he couldn’t play Division 1. Then it was, ‘Oh, he’s not good enough to play in the NBA.’ He just signed a big contract after two years because he was put in the right situation and showed people that they’re wrong.”

Just like every other older brother, he’s confident he’d win, but Austin might just be a bit too good for Spencer now. As stated earlier, he is now one of the more important players for the Lakers and averaged 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game in the 2023 playoffs for them.

The Lakers rewarded Austin with a four-year, $52 million deal, and Spencer is proud that his brother has continued to prove his critics wrong.

As for Spencer, he played for Brose Bamburg last season and averaged 6.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 0.3 steals per game. For the 2023-24 campaign, he signed with SC Rasta Vechta, who just got promoted to the top division of basketball in Germany.

Spencer Reaves Hilariously Told A Lithuanian Player To Talk Trash To Austin

While he is very proud of his younger brother, Spencer had some fun at his expense recently. Austin was, of course, playing for Team USA at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and during their game against Lithuania, Vaidas Kariniauskas kept talking trash to him.

Kariniauskas scored on Reaves and taunted him as well, and it turned out, that Austin had his own brother to blame for it. The Lithuanian revealed that Spencer had told him to talk trash to Austin.

Spencer and Vaidas had been teammates for Bamberg in 2022 and when they spoke before the game, the former told the latter to go at his younger brother. Austin wasn’t too fazed by the Lithuanian’s trash talk, though, and said Kariniauskas played well.

Austin Reaves Reflected On His Time With Team USA

Whether it affected him or not, the game against Lithuania was really the only bad performance that Reaves had for Team USA. He played fairly well in the rest of the games and finished the tournament with averages of 13.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.

Despite his best efforts, though, the U.S. would fail to win a medal. Reaves had 21 points against Germany in the semifinal and then 23 against Canada in the third-place game, but they still lost both games to walk away empty-handed.

Reaves reflected on his stint with Team USA, stating that while he was disappointed with the result, it was still a wonderful opportunity. That it for sure was, and Reaves deserves credit for how well he played when he got it. He showed he is no flash in the pan and will now be gearing up for another strong campaign with the Lakers.
