Austin Reaves has pushed himself into the center of conversation around the NBA with some of his recent performances. He is excelling for the Lakers but what about playing basketball at the international level? It seems Reaves could do that for an unexpected team.

“I’m very interested and have already talked to Dennis Schröder about it. I had a long conversation with national coach Gordon Herbert a year ago. I’m right up for it,” Reaves said about potentially representing Germany at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, as reported by Spox.

Austin Reaves was born and raised in Arkansas, in the United States of America. But his grandmother is German and he has a German passport. European teams have spots for ‘naturalized’ players, and he could very much qualify for that spot and play for Germany.

The German Basketball Association has been recruiting Reaves and trying to get him to join the team. If he does decide to play for them, he will have some interesting NBA-level talent to play alongside. Germany not only has Dennis Schroder in their lineup but also Moe and Franz Wagner, and Maxi Kleber of all the Dallas Mavericks.

Reaves has a shot of getting serious playing time and also winning with them. The same cannot be said if he decides to wait and see if he’ll get a chance from Team USA. The depth of talent it is ridiculous and he would be competing with guards that are much better than him to get some playing time.

Austin Reaves Has Been Incredibly Impressive

All these things are coming his way because Austin Reaves has taken a serious jump in the way he plays this season. He had an explosive 35-point performance that helped the Lakers beat the Orlando Magic. And that’s not all, in his last 10 games, Reaves is averaging 18.9 points and 6.4 assists per game, genuinely great numbers.

This has led to rumors that he could get various offers from teams in free agency. And there’s no guarantee that he will choose to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers either. Reaves is an excellent example of what players can do if they focus and improve their craft and then take the opportunity when it comes their way. If he does end up rep[resenting Germany, it will likely be a top move for both him and their team.
