The Boston Celtics are looking to go full-steam ahead for another run at the NBA title next season, with a summer full of win-now moves. Another win-now but also long-term move on the team’s docket is securing Jaylen Brown’s extension.

Brian Windhorst shared some insight into Brown’s extension and called the negotiations ‘fragile’, as Brown is waiting for a supermax contract offer from the Celtics.

“The sides are talking. This is obviously a very important, fragile deal. I know that there’s interest on both sides to get something done. I would expect it to head in that direction.”

Windhorst elaborated on why he called the situation fragile.

“I think it will get done, but he’s eligible for up to 35 percent of the salary cap, but he doesn’t have to get that. The Celtics can negotiate on that. They can negotiate on the player option. They can negotiate on several things.”

Jaylen Brown averaged 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last season and was an All-NBA player, thus making him eligible for a supermax.

Boston is already comfortably in the luxury tax, but giving Brown a contract could tie up over $800 million for Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Kristaps Porzingis.

Celtics Possibly Exploring Trades?

Windhorst also revealed that one consideration behind extending him now is that Brown will become untradeable during the season, floating the idea of a possible move still being on the table.

“The one thing to point out: if Jaylen Brown gets extended on this deal for a year. For any deal at all. He cannot be traded for a year. For any deal at all. He’s prohibited from being traded. So the Celtics probably want to make sure all their business is locked down before going into this.”

The Celtics have been linked with Damian Lillard. Giving up Brown in that deal will easily surpass offers from the Heat and 76ers. Celtics got two low-value first-round picks for Marcus Smart, so they do have some assets to throw around. A big three of Tatum, Porzingis, and Lillard would be title favorites in the East.
