Losing in the Eastern Conference Finals was a step back for the Boston Celtics, who came to within two wins of winning the championship a season ago. Now, with the very future of the franchise hanging in the balance this summer, the Cs must be careful not to lose everything they’ve built thus far.
After being at the center of trade rumors for weeks, 2x All-Star Jaylen Brown was widely believed to be switching teams this July until a recent report out of Boston revealed that Brown is more likely to sign the supermax with the Celtics than anything else.
“The Celtics do not intend to trade Jaylen Brown and all signs continue to point toward Brown signing a five-year, $295 million super-max extension with Boston,” wrote Adam Himmelsbach.
The Tatum/Brown experiment has been active for years now, and while the Celtics have gotten really close to winning, they have yet to complete the job. After so many attempts, one would think that the Celtics would be ready to try something new, but they’d be hard-pressed to find a player as good as Jaylen right now, and re-signing him is still their best path to a championship.
“As soon as a team gets knocked out of the playoffs, you start hearing about all the changes they need to make,” an NBA coach told Heavy Sports. “Right now, there’s a whole lot of GMs and people with my job that would LOVE to see Boston make a bunch of changes. I mean, are there fans up there actually saying they should break up Brown and Tatum? Sure, you always hope you can tweak things here or there to try to get better, but right now, just about every team in the league would trade its roster for Boston’s straight up.”
Are The Celtics Favored To Win The East?
As the Phoenix Suns continue to break the NBA with blockbuster moves, the Celtics seem content with running it back and giving their guys one last chance to complete the mission.
On paper, Tatum and Brown can certainly work, but you can’t blame some fans for having reservations about Brown’s worth as a star. Is he really a supermax guy, or are the Cs about to make a serious overpay?
We will find out soon enough, but don’t be surprised if Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are still teammates when the new season tips off in October.
