Victor Wembanyama is the undisputed top pick in this year’s draft class, but Scoot Henderson doesn’t fall too far behind. In the eyes of most experts, Henderson has the biggest upside of almost anyone else in the draft this year and he’s expected to be a perennial All-Star when he makes the jump to the NBA.
Unfortunately for the G-League prospect, not everyone is sold on how his game will translate to the NBA. According to one Western Conference Scout, some of Scoot’s biggest flaws will be exposed at the highest level.
“Scoot’s got a chance (to be great). But I worry about Scoot’s mindset, in terms of how hard he has to work,” the scout told league insider David Aldridge. “I don’t want to say they handed everything to him, but they obviously built that whole G League thing around him the last couple of years. He carried himself with an air of I’ve arrived. And I think he’s going to be in for a rude awakening when he gets to the NBA. I could be way off base. There’s some holes in his game.”
Henderson averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game for the G-League Ignite this past season, where he secured himself as a top NBA prospect. As a slasher with elite athleticism and a relentless motor, Scoot obviously has a lot to offer in terms of pure basketball talent but he’s not the best outside shooter and it could limit his effectiveness offensively.
So when it comes time for the Hornets to pick at no. 2, it will be interesting to see which player they go for between Scoot and college star Brandon Miller.
Which Team Will Draft Scoot Henderson?
We obviously cannot be certain of the draft order until the night of the actual draft, but we have it on good authority that Scoot will either go second or third in the draft. Ie he goes to Charlotte, expect the Hornets to test a potential partnership with LaMelo Ball.
If he falls to the Blazers at 3, things could get even more interesting. While Scoot has been adamant that he can play with Damian Lillard, Portland may have some problems if they start the season with both Scoot and Dame on the roster.
Needless to say, the future is mired in uncertainty for Henderson and he’ll have to work hard to ensure that he enjoys a long and successful career in the NBA. hopefully, he understands the work involved and he can prove all the doubters wrong.
