The 2023 ESPY Awards ended up being a positive celebration of the incredible year in sports that we have witnessed. Some great athletes were recognized, while some legendary ones were given tributes.
Carmelo Anthony was given a tribute by the Banana Boat Boys, LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade, for his retirement this season. Anthony addressed his fans and the audience while giving a fitting speech about his exit from the sport.
“Damn. Wow. This is unexpected but really incredible. I just wanna say thank you so much for believing in me. It’s an unbelievable tribute. I am reminded tonight how blessed I have been to follow the dream I had as a kid. Like CP said, in the projects of Redhook, in the hoods of Baltimore, I dreamed of playing in the NBA. Now I’m standing here 20 years after, I feel so incredibly honored.”
Anthony then thanked the fans and reiterated at how special being in the NBA was for him during his career.
“The league and our game will always be special to me, the memories I’ve made, the people that I’ve met, the lessons I learned, and the brotherhood that we created. I can go on and on but I couldn’t have done it without any of you guys, my family, my friends, without my fans, you’ve stood by me and supported me into being the best version of Melo. This journey would not have been possible without you guys.”
He concluded by discussing what’s next before dropping the perfect final line to the adoring fans watching his last moment as a professional athlete.
“As I move into the next stage of my life, we are gonna have fun, I am excited to follow my passions and continue to chase my dreams. I encourage all of you to do the same. Thank you again, and when in doubt, Stay Melo.”

Anthony is one of the most decorated forwards in NBA history. At his peak, there were few players more feared than Carmelo. His career averages are 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists , and he’ll be remembered as one of the greatest players of his generation.
Carmelo Anthony Had An Incredible Career
Carmelo Anthony was named to 10 All-Star teams and six-time All-NBA teams while becoming the ninth leading scorer in league history. He never won a title or an MVP, but is regarded as one of the finest players of his generation.
He started his career with the Denver Nuggets, where he spent nine seasons of his career. He took them as far as the Western Conference Finals, but the team never got over the hump. He’d eventually make it home to New York and gave the Knicks some of the best years they’ve enjoyed in this millennium. He would bounce around the league at the end of his career, playing for the Thunder, Rockets, Blazers, and Lakers in his final season.
His career may not have ended the way he hoped, but it’s a career that 99% of NBA players could dream of having.
