The Phoenix Suns made a league-changing move last night by trading for Kevin Durant and managing to keep Deandre Ayton, Chris Paul, and Devin Booker on the squad to create a highly potent top-heavy 4-man roster.

Durant has catapulted the Suns back to being looked at as title contenders after their 2022 playoff run soured most fans on the old Suns core being actual title contenders. With KD, they’re looking scary.

However, they gave up most of their depth in the trade and now need to win out with a top-heavy roster. Charles Barkley pointed out the same while talking about the team he took to the 1996 NBA Finals.

“The West is so good now. The Lakers, Memphis, your bench is going to be really important. In the buyout market, they’re going to have to go and get some big bodies. You just mentioned, Cam Payne, you just said, is a little guy. TJ Warren is a smaller guy, he’s 6’6″, 6’7″ there. I am talking about after that. They gave up a lot. I am going to be looking at the buyout market for my Suns. Starting lineup? We’re good to go. To win 3 series to just get to the Finals, your bench is going to be huge.”

Teams seldom get very far into title runs without depth but it’s not unheard of. Given the availability concerns that plague players like KD and Chris Paul, there is a chance they need greater depth to offset losing any of their top 4 stars to keep them competitive.

Can The Phoenix Suns Become Champions This Season?

The Western Conference was being called the least competitive it has been in years. However, that prompted teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns to take 2 All-Star starters from the East and add them to their roster to try and get over the mid-table crowd in the West. With the Lakers going down the route of adding depth around their star players, there are a lot of questions about how Phoenix performs this season.

Kevin Durant and Devin Booker are going to be dominant. With the Suns losing depth, the weight may fall on Deandre Ayton and Chris Paul to provide greater consistency now than they have throughout this season.

The buyout market has very talented players available and it seems Phoenix may be the best destination for players like Kevin Love that could be made available.
