In what comes as a rather controversial statement, NBA analyst Colin Cowherd said Luka Doncic was starting to become a lot like former superstar Carmelo Anthony.
“I think Luka’s becoming a little like Carmelo Anthony,” Cowherd said on The Herd With Colin Cowherd. “Carmelo Anthony… one year of college, very young, comes into the league. Luka, a European baller, comes here into the league.”
He further added: “They are immediately great scorers. And they really have some nice team success early on. Don’t get along with everybody, but they score, and in the NBA, that means you are worshipped. Their offensive games are very refined. But then, after like four years, you realize that Melo and Luka are never in great shape, not committed on the defense, stuck in their ways, both get very prickly, and he’s got his way.”
Is Luka Doncic becoming Carmelo Anthony?

This garnered quite the flak from fans across social media. Though we’re sure, Cowherd will stick to his examples and his reasons. His comments come on the back of a disappointing campaign for the Mavericks who failed to make the playoffs.
Doncic has also been in the news regarding his future with the Mavericks. The Slovenian quashed all rumors of his plans of asking Dallas for a trade, especially after a dismal season.
Luka Doncic Guns For Kyrie Irving To Play For The Mavericks
When Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, the side went from playoff favorites to bonafide title contenders. But, the move was a damp squib as the team tumbled from fifth seed all the way down to 11th and missed a playoff berth.
While the pairing up didn’t yield the desired results for Dallas, the side will need to get Irving to re-sign and build a roster that could bolster them on both ends of the court. Doncic has already been vocal about trying to get the guard to stay with the same unit.
“I mean, yeah. I think it’s a great fit,” he said during the exit interview. “Obviously, people are going to say no. I mean, I look at the results we’re having, but you know, as I said, chemistry and relationships take time. I wish he can still be here.”
After his arrival in Dallas, Irving went on a tear averaging 27.0 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds, while Doncic continued his consistent run with 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.0 assists. And despite their offensive prowess, it was a disappointing end to their season.
The Mavericks will need both of these superstars to stay and transform the team to title contenders, but the question is whether the front office can manage to convince them to not shift bases.
