Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are arguably the biggest failed duo we have seen in recent times. After teaming up in February, the Mavs fell from the 5th seed to the 11th seed, missing the postseason entirely.

Even though it’s been a disaster so far, the Mavs need to get Kyrie to re-sign this summer and build a roster that can actually help the backcourt. Doncic has revealed he will be doing his best to get Kyrie to stay in Dallas.

“I mean, yeah. I think it’s a great fit. Obviously, people are going to say no. I mean, I look at the results we’re having, but you know, as I said, chemistry and relationships take time. I wish he can still be here.”

Since being traded to Dallas, Kyrie Irving has averaged 27.0 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in 20 games. Luka Doncic had one of his greatest individual seasons with incredible averages of 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.0 assists. The team not making the playoffs is shocking to everyone, but Irving may be crucial in deciding whether they go another season without playoff basketball.

Can This Pairing Work?

The issues in Dallas over the second half of the season really didn’t concern either player. Their injury issues in February hurt the team deeply, but they got plenty of games together that they lost. Their offensive potency makes them a truly spectacular duo to watch, as they can outscore opponents at will. The only good example that we’ve seen of that is when both players combined for 82 points to beat the Philadelphia 76ers.

Mavs’ head coach Jason Kidd believes the duo is meant to be together, so they’re likely going to revamp the roster around this drop if Irving is willing to stay. Given his options on the open market, Irving is likely to re-sign unless a contending team like the Lakers or Suns can figure out how to sign and trade for Kai.
