Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a non-contact calf injury during the Milwaukee Bucks’ 104-91 win over the Boston Celtics. Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has commented on the injury, revealing that the team’s concern level is high and that they’re hoping for the best.
“That’s a good question. High. But he’s Giannis. I think everyone probably feels the same way as I do right now. We’re just going hope for the best.”

The injury was confirmed to be a calf strain after the game, but Giannis will undergo further testing to make sure the Bucks can rule out any possible injury. A Giannis injury in the final week of the regular season is a proverbial death blow to the Bucks’ chances of contention this year.
Even with the team struggling recently, they pulled off a signature win tonight over the Celtics and made history in the process, with Giannis on the court for a large chunk of the game. Without him, it’s hard to imagine Milwaukee threatening any team in the East unless we see vintage Damian Lillard carry the team to some incredible wins.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Wants To Win A Title With Damian Lillard
Any serious injury that could cause Giannis to miss time in the playoffs will be the worst-case scenario for a Bucks team that went all-in on their current core by acquiring Damian Lillard. The partnership between Giannis and Dame has been harmonious off the court, but the pair haven’t proven themselves to be an elite duo that can win a title together.
Giannis lost a good friend and former championship-winning point guard, Jrue Holiday, when the Bucks acquired Lillard, so he has made it clear that being teammates with Dame is to ensure they win another title together.
“We traded Jrue Holiday, I won’t say I didn’t like it because Damian Lillard is now my teammate and with him we’re going to win the championship, but my best friend leaving, who was living two minutes away from me is tough. We won the championship and we cried together.”
Giannis has also previously said that this is Dame’s team, not his.
“I am his biggest fan. Good or bad, I ride with Dame until the f—ing end. I ride with Dame. Like I’ve been saying this over and over again. This. Is. His. Team. Down the stretch, he’s going to get the ball. There’s nothing else that we will do. I don’t know how else to put it. I don’t know what else to say. But at the end of the day, he has to believe it too.”
Giannis is averaging 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 6.5 assists this season, sitting in the MVP race though the Bucks’ recent struggles have ruled him out of the race by now. Lillard is having a tough year, averaging 24.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 7.0 assists.
If Giannis misses time, Dame could lead the team through the final week of the season and maybe a few games in the playoffs. The team has a 3-3 record without Giannis this season, so the expectation of Dame running the squad without Giannis will be high.
