Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell are on different teams in different conferences now, with wholly separate agendas and objectives, but for the better part of the last decade, both were co-stars for the Jazz in Utah. Mitchell and Gobert formed a duo that offered scoring and defense, but things never really quite worked out for them. And for the first time since both were traded, they recently went up against one another.

This was the first time Donovan Mitchell had played against Rudy Gobert in the NBA, and he must have been hoping to put in a great performance. Sadly, he and his Cavaliers team lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves, even though Gobert had to exit the game early thanks to an injury. Considering how tenuous their relationship seemed at times when they were with the Utah Jazz, questions about the reunion were to be expected and Mitchell spoke about it after the game.

Donovan Mitchell Addressed Playing Against Rudy Gobert, Said It’s Always Good To Catch Up With His Former Teammate

Donovan Mitchell is in a great situation with the Cavaliers, and big things are expected from the team moving forward. But even outside of that, facing Gobert would have been a bit of extra motivation for Mitchell, who has been candid about his time in Utah in the recent past. However, with Gobert having to leave the game after playing just over 13 minutes, their first head-to-head wasn’t too memorable, something Spida spoke about after the game was over.

“It was quick. I didn’t know what happened to him until we started getting blitzed every possession. Then I realized he wasn’t on the floor. Always good to catch up and see him again.”

Gobert being on the flor changes the entire defensive scheme for whichever team he’s playing for, so that makes his absence on the court quite noticeable as well.

Mitchell, who played alongside him for so many years noticing it that way is a testament to how strong their partnership was and how long it lasted. Ultimately, both of them have gone their ways to try and win an NBA championship, but for a lot of NBA and Jazz fans, their names will remains linked together for the rest of their careers.
