The NBA has instituted a new tradition for Summer League, which involves the league giving the winning roster championship rings. It’s a wonderful marketing tactic, but many basketball purists have not been fans of the idea.

As the design of the Summer League rings was revealed, fans seemed pretty shocked that the league was actually going through with giving the Summer League champions this treatment.

One fan thinks the NBA is doing too much, given this is coming soon after the league also instituted a mid-season tournament.

One fan was in support of the rings because most players on these Summer League rosters don’t end up having NBA careers.

More fans were critical of the handing out of new rings.

One fan was upset about the ‘everybody gets a trophy’ approach the NBA has been taking recently.

One fan wanted to make a Chris Paul joke about rings.

Even though I was initially opposed to rings being handed out for Summer League, one fan reaction changed my stance. Most of the players on Summer League rosters either fail to make the league or are out-of-rotation youngsters. For many, this may end up being their career highlight.

These rings aren’t for Victor Wembanyama to call them an accomplishment, but more for the journeymen that go through these rosters to make their NBA dream come true.

The NBA Treating Summer League As A Major Event

The 2023 Las Vegas Summer League, in particular, has been incredibly hyped up. It could be due to the strength of the Draft Class, but there have been some setbacks so far. Wembanyama’s debut disappointed, Brandon Miller has been less than impressive, while Scoot Henderson and Amen Thompson both got hurt. Second-year players like Jabari Smith Jr. and Chet Holmgren are also putting on a show for fans.

Either way, the interest in following the game has been incredible. Wembanyama’s second game earlier tonight was widely followed by fans. Handing out championship rings allows them to continue capitalizing on the hype behind the event this season, as the pictures and videos of the young players celebrating are bound to go viral.
