After another disappointing exit from the NBA playoffs, the Milwaukee Bucks have several questions to answer this offseason. They’re two years removed from winning their first NBA championship in 50 years, and it’s time to refresh the roster to have another chance to compete.
While everything appears to be good, Brian Windhorst reveals that Giannis Antetokounmpo could decline to re-sign with the team this summer.
“They were facing a very difficult situation this summer, even if they’ve won the title. Because they have guys in their 30s who need to get paid, and they have Giannis, who’s in his 20s with a contract extension situation. I think it is unlikely that Giannis extends his contract this summer. He has two years left, with everything that’s going on with the team, and considering that there’s new ownership, that makes it very difficult. The Bucks are headed into the repeater tax. This is what happens to teams that are contenders year after year and they spent, so everything on this team is about to get more expensive. Plus, we have new rules coming in that is gonna limit the way they can improve this roster going forward. They are a late-stage contender with a superstar in his 20s, and there are teams in this league watching very closely to see what happens with the Bucks this summer, notwithstanding a decision potentially on Mike Budenholzer.”
Of course, Giannis still has three years left on his current deal, but securing their superstar for the future has always been the No. 1 task for the Bucks. They know this is crucial for their championship aspirations, as Giannis makes them a threat to the rest of the Eastern Conference.
A lot was said about his future when he rose to stardom. Now, the situation could be similar, and Damian Lillard is already trying to recruit the Greek Freak to Portland.
Giannis Was Frustrated With The Way The Bucks Played Against The Heat
Antetokounmpo made his feelings very clear about the way the Bucks played this year’s first-round series, as the Heat exposed them in every game they won. The 2x NBA MVP wanted to make a deep playoffs run again, but a series of decisions prevented his team from reaching its goal.
Now the situation could get very uncomfortable for the Bucks. Mike Budenholzer could leave the team, Khris Middleton could be moved, and perhaps the Bucks try to pair Giannis with a different superstar. Time will tell how this situation plays out, but right now, it seems like the Bucks will suffer some big changes.
