Gilbert Arenas was an excellent scorer on the Washington Wizards during the early 2000s, earning the nickname ‘Agent Zero.’ He was a 3-time All-Star during that time, but his team only made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals once. Recently speaking on a podcast, he admitted that he could just never beat Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat.

“We was nice, we just didn’t win the division,” Arenas said on the Gil’s Arena podcast, as per HeatNation. “No, we had Miami. I’m pretty sure Miami was in our division. Yeah, I couldn’t beat Wade for sh*t.”

In the 2004-05 season, the Washington Wizards finally managed to return to the playoffs and win a series against the Chicago Bulls. However, Arenas was unable to stop his team from getting swept by Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat. It’s easy to understand why he would say that, since for 3 of Arenas’ best years in Washington, the Miami Heat won the division, while Washington was 2nd.

Gilbert Arenas and Dwyane Wade faced off against one another 21 times, including the 4-0 series sweep. In 17 regular season games, Arenas was able to beat Wade just thrice, while Wade got the better of him on 14 occasions. On average across the games that they faced one another in, Wade had better numbers than Arenas in every major statistical category including nearly 5 more points per game.

Gilbert Arenas Got Told To Shut Up By His Teammate For Talking Trash To Dwyane Wade

The animosity between the two teams was there during that era, Gilbert Arenas did admit that he tried talking trash to Dwyane Wade once. But he quickly got told to shut up by his teammate, Larry Hughes, whose job it was to guard Wade on that night.

“I remember I had to guard him,” Arenas said. “Larry [Hughes] got fouled. Larry got two fouls quick, and I had just finished talking s— too. … This is the first time Larry Hughes told me, ‘Yo bro, man, shut the f— up. If you ain’t guarding the people you talking trash about, do not say nothing.’”

While Dwyane Wade won 2 of his 3 championships playing alongside LeBron James on the Heatles, he was a dominant force in his own right in the early days of his career. He won a championship in 2006, and for a few years there, the Eastern Conference did run through Wade.
