The San Antonio Spurs are once again lined up to compete in the NBA after several years of being in the middle of the pack in the Western Conference. Their dynasty ended when Kawhi Leonard left the team in 2018, and many people wondered when the Spurs would be relevant again.
Well, things are about to change at AT&T Center since they won the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Adding Victor Wembanyama will make this team a lot better, but not everybody was convinced the Spurs would or should get this pick. Not even Gregg Popovich.
“We deserve no more luck ever in the history of NBA basketball,” Popovich said, according to Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News.
Pop added that they already drafted two incredible big men in past years, going deeper on his ‘luck’ comments.
“We drafted Tim Duncan… And before that it was David,” said the NBA’s all-time winningest coach.
In May 1987, the Spurs drafted David Robinson.
10 years later, they drafted Tim Duncan.
Robinson's debut in 89 kicked off what would then become an astounding 30-year run of making the playoffs every season, with the exception being 97 when DROB got injured.

Still, Pop didn’t hesitate to call out those who don’t want the Spurs to have success again and the ones complaining about the team starting over. Every team has to go through this process in every major sport and the five-time NBA champions aren’t the exception.
“Quit your crying. Poor us. We have to start over again. It’s baloney,” Popovich added. “So, I’m just grateful for the good fortune I’ve had personally.”
The Spurs are now ready to start a new era, with Wembanyama showing the way. The Frenchman has shown his excitement after the team earned the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. He knows this is a big place for him to grow his game, and the Spurs are all about him.
After a couple of years of struggles, losing their postseason streak, and seeing their superstar go, San Antonio is ready to embrace a new idol, and Wembanyama can’t wait to join one of the best franchises in the NBA.
San Antonio Spurs Have Always Been Lucky When Finishing A Season Under .300
As Popovich stated, the Spurs have been very lucky in prior years, and the biggest proof of that is the fact that whenever they finished a season under .300, they were given the No. 1 pick in the next draft.
So now things are about to go down, and Popovich and co. are ready to climb back to the top, although it can take some time before they reach their best level.
