The Memphis Grizzlies acquired a big piece ahead of the 2023-24 NBA season. The Boston Celtics parted ways with Marcus Smart, sending him to Memphis as part of the three-team deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to TD Garden.
Before they focused their attention on Smart, the Grizzlies reportedly had other options, including Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors. According to Marc Stein, Green was the first option for the Grizzlies.
“League sources say that the Grizzlies nonetheless had strong interest in Green and were plotting to make some sort of run at him,” Stein reported. “…I’m told that the Grizzlies’ pre-Smart interest in Green was genuine. And it’s fascinating to simply consider the idea of Green engaging Memphis in free agency conversations after the teams’ past battles.”
It would be really odd to see Green with different colors, especially if his new jersey would be a Memphis Grizzlies one. The four-time NBA champion has had a series of back-and-forths with that team, especially with Dillon Brooks, who’s no longer with the team.
Green never missed a chance to diss them and seeing him joining this team was unfathomable for plenty of people around the NBA. The Grizzlies opted to pursue a different player and when another former Defensive Player of the Year became available, they didn’t hesitate to take him.
The rivalry that doesn’t exist would have taken a different meaning if Green joined the Grizzlies, but that won’t happen. At least not via direct trade.
Draymond Green Has Plenty Of Options This Summer
The big man is a sought-after player after declining his player option with the Warriors for this season. He’s seemingly wanting to get a $100 million deal with the Dubs or whichever team ends up acquiring his services.
Earlier this week, the Suns, Heat, and Mavericks were mentioned among the Green’s sweepstakes this offseason. The Grizzlies were included in this group, but all of this happened before the Smart trade.
This move is not completely ruled out, but it seems hard for the Grizzlies to make another move for Draymond Green.
