Ja Morant was seen on an Instagram Live flexing with a firearm once again, a few months after he served an eight-game suspension for doing the same in a Denver nightclub.

Severe consequences are being expected for Morant for his second indiscretion in this situation, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

“Ja Morant is facing the very real possibility of a lengthy suspension to start next season after this latest incident where he ended up carrying a firearm in his possession. This is twice in two months now. The league suspended him for eight games, two of them being retroactive. I sense already that Adam Silver is going to feel increasing pressure from other teams around the league that see this as, as much as it impacts the Grizzlies, it also impacts them… If that was a weapon in Ja Morant’s hand, he will likely face a significant suspension to start next season.”

The situation with Morant is complicated, as he didn’t break any laws in Memphis by carrying a gun. It’s not that simple though, as Morant has a commercial image of himself and the NBA to protect. The Grizz have already suspended him from the team.

As Woj mentioned, teams around the league are not happy about how the league is being portrayed with Morant’s actions, so a more stringent punishment should be extremely likely.

Will Ja Morant Learn From His Mistakes?

Ja Morant skated accountability the last time he was caught in this situation. He blamed his mental health for his gun-related issues and even checked into rehab to take care of some unnamed problems. Evidently, rehab didn’t work and his mental health can’t be used as a shield to hide behind.

This controversy is not about the rule of law but about the image of a young athlete that people are quick to stereotype. Ja has immense influence as an NBA superstar and everyone will be protecting their commercial interests before protecting him.

Ultimately, Morant needs to understand what he’s putting at stake. Even if he personally thinks guns shouldn’t be the problem people are making them out to be, he should understand that he is a role model for kids around the world and these situations will hurt him. It hurt him by making him miss All-NBA and it likely will hurt him in the future in a different way as well.
