During the NBA Three-Point Contest, New York Knicks player Jalen Brunson found himself on the receiving end of unexpected criticism from an unlikely source—his own father, Rick Brunson, who also serves as an assistant coach for the Knicks.

“I heard some dude behind the bench, some bald guy sitting behind the bench, I heard, ‘Yo, you effing bum.’ Who just said that? My dad.”

“He was like, ‘With that bonus we could’ve finished my basement.”

As Jalen lined up his shots during the contest, he heard disparaging remarks directed at him from a fan behind the bench. To his surprise, upon investigation, Jalen discovered that the heckler was none other than his father, Rick Brunson. With a mixture of amusement and incredulity, Jalen recounted how his father jokingly referred to him as an “effing bum” amidst the intense competition.

Adding to the lighthearted banter, Rick Brunson playfully teased his son about missing shots, humorously suggesting that the prize money could have been better utilized to finish their basement. Despite the jesting nature of his comments, Rick’s pride and support for his son’s achievements were evident as he expressed admiration for Jalen’s participation in the All-Star game.

Jalen’s teammate, Josh Hart, found the exchange between father and son amusing, highlighting the camaraderie and familial bonds that permeate professional sports. Despite the pressure and expectations of the NBA stage, moments like these underscore the importance of humor and personal connections, fostering a supportive environment for athletes to thrive.

The interaction between Jalen and Rick Brunson serves as a reminder of the multifaceted roles parents play in their children’s athletic careers, from coach and critic to unwavering supporter.

Jalen Brunson Doubted If He Belonged In The NBA After Looking At Luka Doncic

Jalen Brunson, now a standout player for the New York Knicks, has journeyed from doubting his place in the NBA to becoming a key figure in his team’s success. Despite his current accomplishments, Brunson’s early days in the league were fraught with uncertainty, particularly when he found himself in the shadow of the extraordinary talent of Luka Doncic, his former teammate on the Dallas Mavericks.

Reflecting on his initial impressions of Doncic during their rookie season together in 2018-19, Brunson marveled at the Slovenian sensation’s effortless style of play. Doncic’s ability to dominate the court with apparent ease left Brunson questioning his own abilities and wondering if he truly belonged among the elite ranks of professional basketball players.

Crazy that the Mavs picked Luka and Brunson in the same draft. 🤯

Is that the best single draft a team has ever had?

Brunson candidly admitted that Doncic’s exceptional talent and demeanor instilled doubts in his mind about his own adequacy. While Brunson recognized his own strengths and contributions to the game, witnessing Doncic’s unparalleled skill set left him grappling with feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty about his place in the NBA.

Despite the doubts that plagued him in the presence of a prodigious talent like Doncic, Brunson has since blossomed into a star player in his own right. His tenure with the Knicks has seen him excel on the court, leading his team to success and proving his worth as a formidable force in the league.

While the dynamic between Brunson and Doncic may have shifted with their respective career paths, their mutual respect and admiration for each other’s talents remain evident. Both players have moved on to new chapters in their basketball journeys, yet their shared experiences as teammates continue to shape their perspectives and fuel their individual successes.

Brunson’s journey serves as a testament to the resilience and determination required to overcome self-doubt and thrive in the face of formidable challenges. His evolution from a rookie questioning his place in the league to a seasoned professional making significant contributions to his team underscores the transformative power of perseverance and belief in oneself.
