Guard Jordan Poole is one of the best young combo guards in the NBA, and he is well-known for his shot creation and 3PT shooting ability. There’s no doubt that he is an elite talent, and he has a star-level ceiling.
Despite his ability, Jordan Poole’s playing time in the playoffs has been reduced: he averaged 30.0 minutes in the regular season but only 23.8 minutes in the playoffs. He produced when given playing time in Game 1 against the Lakers, putting up 21 points while shooting 6-11 from 3PT range. After his performance, he seemingly took a shot at Steve Kerr about his playing time.
“Got the opportunity to play more out there and catch my rhythm,” Poole said, per Shayna Rubin of The Mercury News. “I think that’ll be a big thing. Only so much you can do when you play 15 minutes.
“It’s huge. Being able to catch a rhythm early and see how they’re guarding us, guarding me personally.”
There’s no doubt that players often need playing time to show what they can do on the court, and that is no different for Jordan Poole. Still, the guard didn’t have the best performances in the series against the Kings, and Steve Kerr clearly did the right thing by cutting his minutes.
In the playoffs thus far, Jordan Poole has averaged 13.1 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 3.4 APG for the Golden State Warriors. He has been inefficient, only shooting 35.9% from the field and 32.6% from the 3PT range. The team will need him to improve to get past the Lakers, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
Stephen Curry Sent A Message To Jordan Poole And Jonathan Kuminga Who Were Unhappy About Their Role
The fact that Stephen Curry made a speech before the team’s rousing Game 7 win against the Sacramento Kings is well known, and there’s no doubt that this has been one of the legendary moments of this season. In that speech, he notably sent a message to Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga, who were unhappy about their role.
“According to multiple sources in the private session, Curry told the team he believed in them, that they had enough to win. He asked for their trust in return. He assured them he could deliver victory if they all bought in.”
“He implored them to put all of their feelings aside — which sources with knowledge of the locker room felt was messaging directed at Poole, Jonathan Kuminga, and other guys who might’ve been unhappy for reasons such as playing time and role — and lock into the unified mission. Anyone who wanted to remain in their emotions, he told them to stay home. Anyone who was ready for their vacation, he told them not to get on the bus for Sacramento.”
There’s no doubt that in the playoffs, players should sacrifice for the better of the team. However, it is also understandable why talented players would get frustrated with their playing time, or in this case lack thereof. Hopefully, the Warriors are able to figure things out, and become united in the pursuit of another championship.
