  • Kai Jones made some very interesting claims on X on Wednesday night
  • Jones believes he would beat LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal in 1-on-1s, and that he has a better mid-range jumper than Michael Jordan
  • Jones also feels he is better than teammates LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller

Kai Jones believes he has what it takes to beat LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal in 1-on-1 games. On Wednesday night, the Charlotte Hornets center sent out a series of posts on X where he stated he would come out on top against some of the legends of the game.

When asked if he could beat LeBron in a 1-on-1, Jones did not hesitate. He claimed he’d 100% beat the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.

That claim alone would have been enough to raise a lot of eyebrows, but Jones wasn’t done. When he was told he couldn’t beat O’Neal in his prime, the 22-year-old claimed he’d have easily gotten the better of him.

It is entirely possible that Jones was just messing around here. You’d expect NBA players to have a ton of self-confidence, but this is a bit too much. An All-Star caliber player saying such things would be laughed at by the basketball world, let alone a little-known big man who hasn’t really made an impact since coming into the league.

Kai Jones Thinks He Is Better Than LaMelo Ball And Brandon Miller

Considering Jones says he would beat LeBron and O’Neal, it shouldn’t be surprising that he feels he’s better than his teammates as well. When a fan earlier had asked him if he’d at least admit that LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller are better than him, Jones vehemently disagreed.

When a fan called him out for using field goal % when he’s a big man who plays near the rim, Jones made perhaps the boldest claim of the lot. The youngster stated he is a better mid-range shooter than Michael Jordan.

He may be a bit too old for it now, but Jones should know that Jordan is the kind who might want to teach him a lesson for saying this. Not long after the six-time champion had retired in 1998, Chicago Bulls rookie Corey Benjamin started claiming he could beat him in a 1-on-1.

Jordan showed up to Bulls practice in 1999 and embarrassed Benjamin, after which he told him not to call him out of retirement again. He probably can’t play 1-on-1 now when he’s 60 years old, but Jordan could still beat Jones in a mid-range shooting contest.

All this really seems to have stemmed from a controversial Instagram Live where Jones was accused of being on drugs. While he denied that was the case, every Hornets player then proceeded to unfollow Jones.

He wasn’t too pleased by that, and Jones called out some of his teammates after they unfollowed him. He said he is better than Mark Williams and Nick Richards, two of the other big men on the roster. That was what brought upon the question of whether he admits that Ball and Miller are better than him.

Kai Jones Averaged Just 3.4 Points Per Game Last Season

Jones was selected with the 19th pick of the 2021 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, who then traded him to the Hornets. The former Texas Longhorn hasn’t really done much in the league so far, and he averaged just 3.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game in the 2022-23 season.

Jones has spent some time in the G League with Greensboro Swarm as well in his two seasons in the NBA and is some ways away from becoming a key contributor for the Hornets. He might one day become a very good NBA player, but I don’t see that happening in the near future.
