LeBron James recently broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record during the recent game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. There is no doubt that this was a huge achievement for LeBron James, and it is yet another huge statistical achievement on his resume.
Even though LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shared a moment yesterday when the record was broken, the duo notably don’t have a relationship. Recently, Abdul-Jabbar blamed himself for his lack of a relationship with LeBron James, noting in his Substack that his focus was more on “nurturing old friendships” rather than creating new ones.
LeBron said we don’t have a relationship. He’s right—and for that I blame myself. Not for anything I did, but perhaps for not making more of an effort to reach out to him… for the past 15 years my focus has been less on forming new relationships than on nurturing my old friendships with people like Magic, Michael Cooper, Jerry West, and so on.
I think the main reason that I never formed a bond with LeBron (again, entirely my fault) is simply our age difference. I established my scoring record in 1984—the year LeBron was born.

This is definitely unfortunate to hear, but perhaps the two men can develop a relationship in the future. There is no time like the present to do so, and even though LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have their differences, they also have a lot in common.
Magic Johnson Thinks Kareem Abdul-Jabbar And LeBron James Can Work Things Out
Previously, Magic Johnson expressed confidence that LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar can fix their relationship. He noted that the two are “similar” pointing out that they are the first people to comment whenever “something happens in the world.”
“I think one day that’s going to happen. And if I can play a part in that, I would love to do that. I think let (James) pass (Abdul-Jabbar) first (on the NBA all-time scoring list). Let that happen, and let that soak in for a minute, and then put the two men together because they are going find out they’re similar. See, both of them, if something happens in the world, they’re the first ones to comment on it.
Both LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are generally regarded as athletes who are outspoken on social issues. The two could potentially develop a better relationship based on their similarities in that regard and any other similarities they may have.
Hopefully, Magic Johnson is right about the two being able to fix their relationship. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future, and perhaps last night was the start of them being able to mend things.
