Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett were two of the most intense players of the 2000s. Both played the game with an unmatched passion, doing everything they could to win. The idea of them playing together is exciting for NBA fans, although that never happened.

But that’s not to say it couldn’t have. Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant were close to teaming up on the Los Angeles Lakers at one point. And KG once explained why he thinks the tandem would have worked.

Absolutely. People know me, I’m a very sure person,” Garnett said to the NBA’s official website in 2020. “I don’t lack any confidence in myself. But I can also be a great Robin. I’m a Batman, don’t get it twisted. I can be a great Robin.

“Paul Pierce is a big ego, he’s a big personality. That’s what he shines at. I understood I was coming to his team, and I wanted him to know that. I played a great Robin when I had to. But in my own life, I’m an alpha, I’m a king, I run my own stuff. I don’t mind being able to step to the side and let someone be great also.

“Absolutely we could co-exist. If he could play with Shaq he could play with me. One of my greatest attributes is that I was a great teammate, whoever it was. You can ask that.”

Kevin Garnett moved to the Lakers’ biggest rivals, the Boston Celtics, and ended up winning the NBA championship. Kobe Bryant too got a new team and the two clashed in the NBA Finals as well. If they had teamed up in the late 2000s on the Lakers though, another threepeat could have been a reality for the franchise.

Kevin McHale And Danny Ainge Were Reportedly Responsible For Not Allowing Garnett And Bryant To Team Up

Any NBA fan would love to see a team with Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett together. The fact that this didn’t happen is a true tragedy. And reportedly it was thanks to old Celtics teammates, Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge. They ended up ensuring that Garnett ended up a Celtic.

Kevin Garnett revealed Kobe Bryant’s messages to him after he got traded to the Celtics, and a team with the two stars will remain one of the biggest what-ifs ever. And Kevin Garnett is right, they would have made it work considering how great both of them were.
