Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving didn’t have the ideal start to their partnership last night when they lost in OT to the Sacramento Kings. Both players were familiarizing themselves with each other’s styles, and the moments when they connected on the court it was electric.
They are two of the most talented individuals in the NBA, and the excitement to see them for the rest of the season is through the roof.
Kevin Garnett loves this duo, telling Paul Pierce that this is easily the best duo in the NBA. Pierce disagreed, but Garnett was sure of the position he was taking.
Double Alphas. Kyrie and Luka! Best duo in the West. @paulpierce34 ain’t goin for it tho. I’m standing on it…https://t.co/RUZzyKAVc4 pic.twitter.com/Dcytm8i1yO

KG: “There’s no better two in the West. You can see Kawhi and PG, but there’s not two better motherf***ers in the West. Luka can sit out a whole quarter and come back, tag you in. Sh*t boy, you tripping. We were talking about top 10 ones, both of them are on the list.”
Paul Pierce: “But that was Kyrie with Durant.”
KG: “Facts, but it’s over now. We got a whole better, younger. That was the old Durant. This the younger version that get you 60-10-8 by himself, on one leg. And he ain’t even in good shape!”
Doncic is just coming back from a heel injury that sidelined him for 5 games. They have to figure out how to play off each other better, as both started passing the ball way too much in an effort to keep the other player engaged.
Is There A Better Backcourt In The NBA?
Guards are arguably the most important players in the modern NBA because of how much they are made to impact the game. Guards aren’t just setting the table for their wings and bigs anymore; they’ve shown the ability to be electric scorers and do everything on the court. Luka Doncic exemplifies that, and Irving is arguably one of the greatest ball handlers in NBA history.
Even if you bring up backcourts like Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell or Ja Morant and Desmond Bane, it’s hard to say that they are better than this All-Star starter duo in Dallas. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson aren’t the backcourt they once were, and the same goes for Devin Booker and Chris Paul, given CP3’s decline this season.
Doncic is averaging 33.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 8.2 assists this season, while Irving is averaging 27.0 points, 5.4 assists, and 5.1 rebounds.
