The Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James GOAT debate will rage on long after both players live due to their incredible impact on the game in their respective eras. Some people pick LeBron, some people pick MJ, but older fans almost always tend to pick Jordan.

Comedian Kevin Hart was talking to an unnamed guest on a show who was upset at someone saying LeBron is greater than MJ. Hart expressed his unequivocal support for Jordan being better than LeBron.

“The conversation of Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James and you hearing that LeBron James would win really pissed you off. Rightfully so, because that’s your era. You came up in the era of Michael Jordan, this era today is coming up in the great era of LeBron James, which is an amazing era.”

While he did credit LeBron, he maintained MJ wins this argument because of his influence and impact on the NBA.

“But I don’t think you can compare the two because Mike is Mike. Mike is Mike for a reason, the game changed because of Mike. A lot of players have the swag and the movement they have today because of Mike. That can never be discredited or discounted… Jordan will forever win those arguments and those battles in my eyes. Forever.”

Jordan and LeBron have incredible achievements on the court. It’s unfair to compare the two due to the differences in eras, rules, and even the athletic talents of players. The league becomes faster and more athletic every season. Whether that makes it more competitive or less competitive will be argued till the cows come home, but there are objective ways to analyze the argument.

Can We Solve The GOAT Debate?

The simple answer is no. There are far too many things to consider when talking about who the GOAT of basketball is. Jordan unarguably had the greatest prime the league has ever seen, ensuring he was the scoring champion almost every season while going 6-0 in the NBA Finals. He won MVPs, Finals MVPs, and Defensive Player of the Year, but ultimately didn’t play a lot of games due to his unscheduled retirements.

If MJ had the greatest prime, James has the greatest longevity we have ever seen. He broke most records for players who made it to Year 20 in their career; he’s still competing at the highest level of the sport and has put a lot of all-time records in his name. Though his Finals record won’t read 6-0, the miles on his body and the success he’s enjoyed even after slowly losing his athleticism shows we’ve never seen a prospect like him.

We will always compare the two, but it seems there will never be one objective answer people can rely upon.
