Austin Reaves has made his mark in the NBA after having a breakout year with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Many are already expecting Reaves to suit up for Germany’s national team when he is free from his Lakers duties. However, the 24-year-old is seemingly ignoring his call-up to play for the national team. German head coach Gordon Herbert revealed his talk with Austin in a recent interview with Eurohoops.

“At that time, I had a short conversation with him and further conversations with his agent. But it was not yet clear whether he would play for us. Later on, I read in the press that he really wants to play for Germany.

“I contacted Austin by SMS and called him, but I did not receive an answer.”

Germany has been actively recruiting Austin Reaves ahead of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. His addition to the team will obviously improve the Germans’ chances of winning the tournament, but does the Lakers star really want to play for Germany?

Austin Reaves Confirmed His Wish To Play For Germany

The upcoming summer is very important for Austin Reaves’ career. On one hand, he is expected to land a huge contract extension with the Lakers. While on the other, Reaves is expected to play for the German national team.

The Lakers shooting guard confirmed his desire to play for them a couple of months ago while also mentioning that he has already had a conversation about it with coach Herbert.

“I’m very interested and have already talked to Dennis Schröder about it. I had a long conversation with national coach Gordon Herbert a year ago. I’m right up for it.”

It is possible that Reaves is simply waiting for the playoffs to be over before providing a response to Coach Herbert and the German national team. The Lakers currently have a 3-1 lead over the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the postseason.
