Becoming an NBA champion is the ultimate goal of most players in the league today. That is especially true for veterans, as a title ends up validating all the years of struggle and hard work that they go through.

Recently, Patrick Beverley revealed that he and Russell Westbrook are excited to get championship rings if the Lakers win the title. Chris Haynes has confirmed that the guard pair will indeed get rings if the Lakers are victorious this season.

“If the Lakers were able to win the championship, I was told by a high-ranking source within the organization that they will extend a championship ring to all players who were on the roster at any point during the season. That means if the Lakers win the whole thing, Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverley, and others will receive a championship ring.”

Westbrook and Beverley were traded away at the trade deadline, with Russ being traded to the Utah Jazz and Beverley being traded to the Orlando Magic. Both players did play a huge role in the locker room for the majority of the season until February, so they deserve their rings even if they weren’t a part of the final roster.

Is This The Right Thing To Do?

NBA teams are not obligated to give championship rings to players who aren’t a part of the final championship-winning roster. The best example of the same is Jonas Valanciunas not getting a ring with the 2019 Toronto Raptors because he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies during the season. Getting a ring is at the team’s discretion, so this is a very positive move by the Lakers.

Nobody will refer to Russell Westbrook, Patrick Beverley, and other players that left the team throughout the season as champs if they’re not on the final roster. That will be unfortunate, but if the organization recognizes their contributions and rewards them even after they were traded away, what fans say should be immaterial.
