LeBron James set the alarm after the Denver Nuggets swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2023 Western Conference Finals, making some worrisome comments about his future in the league, hinting at a potential retirement.

Everybody had something to say about those comments, with the vast majority agreeing that LeBron won’t retire this year. One of his oldest friends, Romeo Travis, recently touched on this situation, claiming that James isn’t going anywhere.

“In my opinion, I don’t think he’s retiring this year,” Romeo said, per Yahoo! Sports.

Another friend of James believes he is actually thinking about finishing his career after this season, but still hopes the four-time NBA champion makes a different decision.

“I hope not, but I think it is really on his mind, and I think he’s really doing some soul-searching. … I think he is thinking about it,” Sian Cotton said.

This is a big storyline coming into the 2023 NBA offseason. Everybody is aware that sooner than later LeBron is one of the players who will be retired by 2025, but not many thought it would happen under these circumstances.

The Los Angeles Lakers started the season with more doubts than certainties and they found their touch along the way. Things got better after the trade deadline and they went all the way to the Conference Finals. Even with the sweep, the Lakers did a terrific job and Bron should run it back to see how they fare next year.

He’s still waiting to see if he can play with his son Bronny in the league, and even though he’s made it clear he’s not losing sleep over that, it would be a tremendous achievement for James to share touches with his firstborn.

Still, the chances that LeBron doesn’t retire remain high, but the chances that he’s not on the Lakers next season could get bigger.

LeBron Could Not Be On The Lakers Next Season

According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, there’s still a percentage that LeBron won’t be on the Lakers roster to start next season. Either via trade or retirement, the King could end up leaving the team.

Another report suggests that he’s set to fulfill his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and will play one more season. Having said that, it seems like the King only has one or two more seasons in him, depending on if he can play with Bronny.

After 20 years in the league, LeBron has nothing left to prove, and winning another championship would only confirm that he’s one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball.
