The Los Angeles Clippers are running out of time to become successful with their current core. The team has not been able to get to the NBA Finals in the Kawhi Leonard and Paul George era and it seems they might be thinking about the future a little bit already.
Paul George has been linked with a potential move to the New York Knicks via trade. And while there is only speculation about a potential package for him so far, the latest reports indicate that the Clippers are interested in a young player on the Knicks.
“I do know — the Clippers over there — there are some fans of RJ Barrett,” said NBA insider Ian Begley of SportsNet New York.
RJ Barrett was the 3rd overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft only behind Zion Williamson and Ja Morant. But he hasn’t quite developed in the way that the Knicks would have hoped for. He has shown signs of being a very good player, but he is yet to show that he can be a star.
In the last two seasons, Barrett has averaged 19.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. The scoring looks alright, but he hasn’t done it too efficiently. Barrett has shot 42.1% from the field, 32.6% from the three-point line, and 72.7% from the three-point line.
Despite this, there are a lot of people that still believe in his talent. It’s hard to say whether the Knicks would be willing to part with him considering that he is just 23 years old, but in a deal for Paul George, they might just consider it.
The Clippers Can Get Someone Greater Than RJ Barrett In A Deal For Paul George
It doesn’t make sense for the Clippers to trade Paul George with RJ Barrett being the centerpiece of whatever the Knicks offer in terms of value. That doesn’t help the team now. But a 3-team trade drawn up by Blacher Report might just work, with Barrett going to the Blazers instead and the Clips getting Damian Lillard.
This will be an interesting space to watch for the rest of the offseason, especially if the Clippers do decide to try and find someone else to pair with Kawhi Leonard. Whatever the situation, Barrett is owed $107 million over the next four seasons, meaning his career is covered for now.
