Anthony Davis has had an extremely successful career. He’s an NBA champion, has made multiple All-NBA teams, and was selected for the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team as well. And while his accolades and game cannot be questioned, some feel that AD is a bit overrated considering his lack of playoff success without LeBron James by his side.

Davis was drafted by the New Orleans Hornets who eventually became the Pelicans and only managed to make the playoffs twice and one series before moving to the Lakers in a trade ahead of the 2019 season. And now Chris Webber has questioned Davis’ achievements, suggesting that he’s not achieved much by himself in his career  (via HoopsWire).

“I felt that he could be that missing piece for someone else. I don’t know what he’s proven (as the lone star).”

“He’s a wonderful talent, and he hit some big shots for LeBron,” Webber added. “I get that. But we’re talking about him being the alpha, and I don’t know when that’s worked.”

Davis has struggled with injury at various points throughout his career, including the last couple of seasons after the Lakers won the championship in 2020. His stock has dropped, with various fans and media members calling him out for not being able to get on the court.

To be fair to AD, injuries are not something he can control, and he often gets criticized even when he tries to rush back into action, something Davis himself pointed out in a recent interview. The Lakers’ dysfunction this season also hasn’t helped and if he had been available some more, they would surely have not missed the play-in tournament.

In any case, with LeBron James getting up there in age, Davis is the player that has to carry the Lakers for the next 4-5 years if he stays and during that time, he should get a chance to prove to all the people that are questioning him on this front wrong.
