3 Players The Dallas Mavericks Could Trade This Season

The Dallas Mavericks might look at putting the likes of Dwight Powell, Davis Bertans, and Tim Hardaway Jr. on the trade market.

The Dallas Mavericks have had a wobbly season so far despite Luka Doncic’s brilliance. While the Slovenian has been their potent weapon, the side definitely needs another superstar to share the load, and that would be the prime reason behind their front office looking at adding a potential superstar during the trade window.

  • 1. Tim Hardaway Jr.

The team lost the services of Jalen Brunson in the offseason, and the point guard is currently averaging 20.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists for the New York Knicks. However, his absence has created a dent in the Mavericks’ roster.

Note that they do have the players for trade whom most sides can use right now. More importantly, their window with the 23-year-old Doncic is a relatively short one, especially after the rumor mills churned that he may want out of Dallas if the think-tank couldn’t put the right pieces around him.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the three players the Mavericks can ship to bolster their squad.

3. Dwight Powell

The Mavericks might consider shipping center Dwight Powell who is in his last year with the side, with an $11 million contract.

He is one of the players eligible for trade, and with Jason Kidd’s preference for a center who can offer solid rim protection and shooting, the side could attach Powell as part of a package. There’s a possibility that Dallas could make a beeline for Indiana Pacers’ Myles Turner, who has been one of the frequent names in the trade market.

He has been averaging 16.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks and is unarguably a massive upgrade. The price isn’t a caveat for the Mavericks, as he is in his final year with $18 million. So a couple of role players and Powell might be one of the deals on the table.

2. Davis Bertans

Davis Bertans is one of the players with a contract that makes it easy for the Mavericks to pull off a solid trade. He’s on a $16 million pay this season and has two more seasons of $17 million and $16 million each with the option of early termination. He averages 3.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.4 assists.

The reduced minutes suggest that he may not be part of the Mavericks’ long-term plans. A recent Forbes report suggested that the outfit was keen on adding New York Knicks’ superstar Derrick Rose to the mix (note that he was also linked to the Los Angeles Lakers), and that would mean trading Bertans as he is one of the four players who can be considered to match Rose’s $43.56 million contract.

He is set to make $14.52 million this season and $15.59 million next year, although the final year is a team option. However, they do have Kemba Walker on their side, which would mean looking at more options.

1. Tim Hardaway Jr.

Trading Tim Hardaway Jr. would mean Dallas solving two problems with one move, or at least that’s what Heavy’s Jack Simone believes. A proposed trade sends Hardaway Jr., Powell, and their two picks (2025 2nd-Round, 2029 2nd-Round) to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for D’Angelo Russell.

Russell is on an expiring contract ($31 million) with the Timberwolves, while Hardaway has a couple of years left with the Mavericks with around $19.6 million.

Trading him would also mean some wiggle room to work with. At the time of writing, Russell averages 15.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.6 assists and is a reliable ball-handler who can make a splash. Will he be the answer to Dallas’ woes? Only time will tell.
