Amid the disaster unfolding in Los Angeles, JJ Redick’s family home became one of the many properties destroyed by raging wildfires. Speaking to the media this week, Redick made a statement on his current situation and detailed the experience he and his family had with the sister this week.
“My wife got out early, she was on the other side, close to mid-city, and then came outside and saw the fire,” said Reddick. “She was with some people and they were headed to the airport and she went home and grabbed our nanny and this was all going on pre-game Tuesday. I was scrambling to find a hotel that had room for them. So she got out of there and didn’t spend any time on Twitter (X) for a long time.”
Redick, who is in his first season as the Lakers head coach, advocated for his team to continue their scheduled games this week but the NBA had other plans by postponing the Lakers and Clippers games on Saturday.
Amid the chaos, Redick went to see the damage for himself and says that he was shocked with the results.
“I headed up to the Palisades and I just had to see it for myself. I was not prepared for what I saw. It’s complete devastation and destruction. I had to go a different way to the house but I went through most of the village and it’s all gone. And I don’t think you can ever prepare yourself for something like that. Our home is gone.”
The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles have caused mass devastation in the area, resulting in billions of costs in damages and the destruction of over 100,000 buildings. Like many other LA residents, JJ Redick lost his home in the crisis but he doesn’t want any sympathy from the fans.
“Everything we owned that was of any importance to us was in that house and there’s certain things you can’t replace that will never be replaced. Memories, 10 years together now, Chelsea and I, there’s just certain things in that house you cannot replace… My family and I were processing the individual side of losing your home and you don’t ever want to wish that on anybody. But I don’t want people to feel sorry for me and my family. We’re gonna be alright. There are people that, because of some political issues and some insurance issues, are not gonna be alright.”
As head coach of the Lakers, JJ Redick is worth millions and he’s got enough resources to rebuild after losing all of his things. He’s luckier than most people who have been affected by the fires, who may not have the money or the help to move on from this natural disaster.
Regarding what’s next for the city, nobody can say for sure when the fires will be extinguished but the process of putting them out is expected to take some time which means even more people will be at risk. For their part, the NBA (in partnership with the Lakers and Clippers) will work to help those in the city until the crisis is resolved.
Unfortunately for Redick, there’s no building back what was destroyed but now he has a chance to rebuild and that’s more than can be said for many of the wildfire victims over the past week.
