The New Orleans Pelicans have had an injury-riddled season from before the season even started, refocusing on tanking a month into the season. Despite Zion Williamson’s excellent form recently, the team is stuck in the basement of the West and looking ahead to next season after adding a top draft pick in the summer.

While they had already solidified a high draft spot with their 18-51 record, the franchise got hit with another major injury blow as Trey Murphy III was ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn labrum.

“New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III has suffered a season-ending torn labrum in his right shoulder, sources tell ESPN. Murphy was in the midst of a career NBA season in his fourth campaign, averaging 21.2 points and posting his third year with 150+ made 3s.”

Murphy was in the middle of the best season of his career, averaging 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He has shown a propensity to get hurt, but he still played 53 games this season.

Nonetheless, his emergence has made New Orleans confident that he can be the team’s long-term star forward, as they traded Brandon Ingram away.

This is the third starter to see their season come to an end due to injury. Herb Jones tore his rotator cuff in January and was ruled out for the season, as the injury can take up to six months to heal. Dejounte Murray suffered a ruptured Achilles in February, with a return at the start of next season questionable due to the severity of the injury.

Unfortunately, Murphy might also just be healthy in time for training camp six months from now. Otherwise, the team might have an interrupted start to next season as well.
