DeMarcus Cousins was one of the standout centers in the NBA during the tail-end of the 2010s before an Achilles and ACL injury completely derailed his career. He’s been a journeyman since and has been out of the NBA for a year

Stephen A. Smith shockingly claimed that Cousins would be a top-five center in the NBA today if the league wasn’t ostracizing him.

“I don’t like how DeMarcus Cousins is being treated by the NBA, he’s still got game. DeMarcus Cousins right now would be a top-five big man in basketball. With his skill set, his body, his strength, his shooting ability, his basketball IQ, everything, he would be a top-five player.”

Stephen A. then said that he doesn’t deserve to be ostracized and play in Puerto Rico.

“Even if you think he should’ve acted a certain way and not been acerbic, where’s forgiveness at?… This brother has game and doesn’t deserve to be in Puerto Rico playing basketball. You got people in the league ostracizing him because of a personality he once had.”

Cousins didn’t have a major controversy during his career but had many smaller incidents. He was brash and aggressive towards coaches, referees, and almost everyone on the court. He was also considered arrogant and made many people upset when he signed with the Warriors on a mid-level to ring-chase in 2018.

DeMarcus Cousins Had A Quick Fall From The Top

Cousins was drafted into the NBA by the Sacramento Kings, failing to lead them to the playoffs in his seven-year stint with the franchise. It was a tumultuous time, as Cousins had various on and off-court incidents that led to game and team suspensions. He did become an All-NBA and All-Star player for the Kings, who never capitalized on Cousins’ ability.

He was then sent to the Pelicans for one season where he formed a formidable twin-tower lineup alongside Anthony Davis. A torn Achilles in January 2018 meant he couldn’t make it to the playoffs with the team before leaving in the summer to join the Warriors on the $5.3 million mid-level exception.

Cousins didn’t recover from his Achilles injury until January 2019, playing for the franchise until the first round of the 2019 Playoffs before suffering a torn quadriceps. He returned for one game in the Finals, as an injury-ridden Warriors lost in six to the Raptors.

He signed with the Lakers on the minimum for 2019-20 but ended up never suiting up for them due to tearing his ACL in the offseason. He did get a championship ring when the Lakers won the 2020 title. He made a return on the tanking 2019-20 Rockets before being waived and signing with the Clippers.

He played for the Bucks and Nuggets in the 2021-22 season, making it to the playoffs with the Nuggets. Unfortunately, he hasn’t gotten a job since. His career averages of 19.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists are impressive, but it’ll take a desperate move for a team to bring Boogie back from Puerto Rico.
