The Phoenix Suns are going to face some serious challenges this offseason as they build a rotation around their big four of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Deandre Ayton, and new acquisition Bradley Beal.
With four players on different levels of max contracts, the Suns are going to be way over the salary cap this summer. The veteran minimum contract will be their biggest weapon, as Suns insider John Gambodoro revealed that teams around the league are worried that the best veteran minimums will go to Phoenix for a chance to win and get playing time.
(11:50) “Other teams are worried about that, several teams that I’ve talked to. The fear is that when it comes down to the veteran minimum guys, the Suns are gonna have the cream of the crop. There’s a concern from other teams that everybody is going to want to go to Phoenix before anywhere else, because of playing time. A chance to win and playing time.”
Minimum contract players usually go to the team they think has the best chance of winning. We saw that with the 2021 Brooklyn Nets as well, with many players joining the squad off the buyout market, like LaMarcus Aldridge, Patty Mills, and Blake Griffin.
It didn’t result in a title for the Nets, but this summer, another Kevin Durant team will use championship allure to get prized veterans around the NBA to join them in the summer.
Can The Phoenix Suns Win Like This?
We have seen many top-heavy teams in the NBA give most of their salary to the three best players and build a roster creatively around them, with the 2010-2014 Miami Heat being a great example. The difference now is that the CBA rules are becoming far more punitive to overspending teams, and the Suns have four max contract players on their books.
With Deandre Ayton off the trade market, the Suns will commit $162.9 million to four players at the start of the season. Cameron Payne, Jordan Goodwin, Ish Wainwright, and Isaiah Todd are expected to be on the team as well, with only Payne being a reliable rotational player.
The Suns will have to get creative with their use of two-way contracts and will have a free-agent workout on Wednesday to see which players can be of use to them despite their financial situation.
