The 2023 NBA Draft caught the attention of a lot of people, and new prospects have come into the league that people have high expectations of. But there are still youngsters from previous years that have a lot left to prove.
The battle for Rookie Of The Year in 2023-24 will include 2022’s No. 2 overall pick, Chet Holmgren. Chet picked up a Lisfranc injury ahead of last season and was unable to play a single game in what should have been his rookie year for the Oklahoma City Thunder. But now GM Sam Presti has revealed when he is expected to return to the court.
“It’s our hope he’ll be out there. It’s our expectation. Chet’s doing great. He’s had a great offseason,” Presti said. “He looks really good. We’re excited for him. But I don’t think anybody is more excited than him.”

Chet Holmgren excited quite a few people when he played in the NBA Summer League for the Thunder last year, and it seems like that’s what he’ll return for this time too. Having missed a whole season, Holmgren will have to get up to speed somehow, and being back as soon as July will be a big help on that front.
There is a lot of excitement around what Chet Holmgren can be, in some ways, he got a lot of the same hype that Victor Wembanyama is getting this year. Although not as highly touted a prospect as Wembanyama, Holmgren has earned comparisons to the likes of Kevin Durant in the past, and his ceiling is incredibly high. The hope will be that he can build back up and be available to play during the regular season this time.
Chet Holmgren Has Grand Ideas Of What He, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, And Josh Giddey Can Do
The Oklahoma City Thunder have two other young stars with sky-high potential, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey. And Chet Holmgren thinks that once he makes his return, the trio can be like the last trio of MVPs drafted by the Thunder.
“Obviously, I believe in the players we have on this team, I believe in the coaching staff, I believe in the organization as a whole, so the answer is an obvious yes,” Holmgren said when asked about the similarity between this team and Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and James Harden.
“I think we can reach really high heights. At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to what the guys in the locker decide to come together and achieve.”
The Oklahoma City Thunder missed out on the playoffs last season, but with the way Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has developed, they look set to make it this season. Adding Holmgren could give the team another dimension and another boost, their fans have a lot to look forward to.
