The Boston Celtics are at a crossroads, Jaylen Brown could leave the team in 2024 as a free agent, or they might have to trade him in the coming offseason to recoup some assets.

Jaylen Brown is eligible for a max contract that could pay him $290 million over five years, but that has yet to be offered. And while some think the Celtics are better off not giving it to him, Tracy McGrady has urged them to do so.

“You don’t dismantle that, I’m sorry,” McGrady said. “Hell yeah, you keep that. This is what 25 and 26-year-olds? Why would you get rid of that? I don’t understand why would you get rid of two guys that have played for NBA Championship, went to four Eastern Conference Finals… At some point, these guys are gonna raise a banner.

“LeBron is on his way out, Steph is getting older, KD and those guys are getting older. These guys are 25 and 26 years old, you are not going to find a better duo than these two.”

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown may have failed to win a championship together so far, but there are definitely one of the best duos in the league. They are also just entering their prime, which means retaining Brown will allow the Celtics to be contenders for years to come.

The proposed contract is a massive one, and Jaylen Brown has struggled in some big moments, but this would be the best bet for the Celtics. The salary cap is set to increase soon, so Brown’s contract might not seem so big by the time he’s in his third or fourth year. In the last three seasons, he has averaged 25 points per game and 6.3 rebounds, and he is still improving.

Boston Celtics Are Being Urged To Give Jaylen Brown His $290 Million Supermax

These are not decisions the team can make lightly, but some people think it’s a no-brainer. An NBA GM recently explained why the Celtics have to re-sign Brown

“But the main reason why everyone out here knows they have to get something done with him is that you can never afford to lose an asset like that… Even if you sign him and things don’t work out with your team down the line, you have a player of value. All-Star players can attract free agents who want to play with them, or you can use your player as an asset in a trade.”

The franchise went to the NBA Finals last season and almost made history coming back from 3-0 down in the playoffs in this season’s Conference Finals. Jaylen Brown is a proper star in the NBA, and it’s likely he will remain with the Celtics unless he truly wishes to play somewhere else.
