After snapping a 20-game losing streak on Friday, Victor Wembanyama didn’t hold back in his post-game press conference. On the subject of going against LeBron James for the first time in his career, Wembanyama explained that he didn’t feel the way he thought he would coming in.

“I thought I would feel some type of way but honestly, on the court, I was just trying to win, trying to defend and make the right plays. So, no, I didn’t have no type of feelings about it,” said Wembanyama.

Wemby was asked if he was "star struck" playing against LeBron for the first time:

The Lakers won rather convincingly for the first game, finishing with 122 points thanks to a 37-point performance from Anthony Davis. In game two, without Davis, LeBron put up a valiant effort in the loss with a box score of 23 points, 14 assists, and 7 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Both players are clearly on very different paths right now and it will be interesting to see what their situation looks like when they meet up again in Crypto.com arena on February 23rd.

Victor Is Answering The Call

After 20 years in the league, LeBron James is a living legend in the NBA and most rookies would feel a certain way about facing him for the first time. In the case of Wembanyama, however, he delivered one of his most well-rounded games of the season with 13 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks on the night. These types of performances have become somewhat normal for Victor, who is up to 19.0 points and 10.9 rebounds per game on the season.

As a team, it’s no secret that the Spurs have been horrible this year. Friday’s win snapped a historic 18-game losing streak for the franchise but it was only their fourth win of the season. Even so, despite being dead last in the West standings, Wmebanyama has been holding his own and he’s stood out as the lone bright spot for this Spurs team.

The Last Dance For LeBron James?

LeBron will turn 39 years old later this month, and there’s no getting around the fact that the end is in sight for his NBA career. Assuming he’s only got three or four more years left, we are in the final stage of James’ career now and the time will come for a new superstar to take his place as the face of the league.

At just 19 years old, Wembanyama is one of the few players who has a chance to take LeBron’s mantle for himself but there is still so much work to be done. Until Victor can be consistent with his play and lead the Spurs to some semblance of success, there will always be some who doubt about his trajectory in the NBA. LeBron James isn’t one of those people and he has already seen enough to count Victor as one of the elites in the game. Now it’s up to Victor to live up to that title and prove that he belongs with the best of the best.
